Chief Executive Officer, Chair of the Board, Thought Leader, Innovator, Nutrition and Prevention 1st Advocate
USPTO is committing major wrongs. Most people understand that USPTO has violated inventors, but what is worse is that it is committing crimes against humanity. For example, by refusing to grant proper patents in nutrition, they are increasing misinformation and disinformation, and they are making public dependent on drugs and devices by favorably granting patents to drugs and devices. Here's the sequence: Patent exclusivity to piecemeal nutrients or drugs and devices ➡️ cornered market ➡️ investor interest ⬆️ marketing budget ⬆️ miseducation, misinformation, disinformation ⬆️ public health⬇️ The above has longterm public health consequences in genetics shifts and adversity of pandemics like COVID.
Thomas David Petite expanded our world through his invention of Wireless Mesh Technology that enables all mobile phones to work. Petite, a member of the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa tribe, founded the Native American Intellectual Property Enterprise Council, a nonprofit organization that helps Native American inventors and communities around the country. He has more than 50 patents. We’re pausing to pay homage to North American Indigenous people whose talent strengthens the innovation ecosystem with extraordinary innovation.

I help purpose-driven entrepreneurs amplify their passion and grow businesses that align with their heart and soul.
In times of change, history has shown us the power of collective action. Today, we stand at a similar crossroads, feeling the world shift beneath us. The conflicts, the global tensions, they're more than just news headlines; they're a sign that something fundamental is amiss. This feeling of unease, the inner turmoil, it's not just personal—it's a shared experience, a call to action. Think of moments in history: when people stood up for civil rights, or when walls fell in Berlin. These were times when the collective courage of individuals sparked monumental changes. Today, we face our own challenges, and it's up to us to respond with similar bravery. By stepping out of our comfort zones and standing up for our beliefs, we can shape a better future. This isn't a time for despair; it's a time for action, for unity, for embracing a new era. Let's be the change we wish to see, together.

I don’t really agree with any analysis that blames culture for a society’s problems; it’s lazy and ultimately empirically inaccurate. In fact, the “studies” vaguely mentioned in this essay actually paint a different picture. Rule of law and lack of corruption are not in fact the biggest issues to address for socioeconomic development. We know this because countries such as China, South Korea, and now Thailand and Viet Nam developed or are rapidly developing in spite of massive inconsistencies in rule of law and widespread corruption. So what actually leads to development? What ties these countries together? Strong party politics and strong institutions. What this means is that the politicians need to answer to the state rather than their own families and special interests. (For the most authoritative work on this, see Antoinette Raquiza’s work comparing Thailand’s institutions with the Philippines’). Some people may say this is a cultural issue but it actually isn’t. Viet Nam in this case becomes the best comparison to the Philippines because it was also colonized by Europeans and dealt with similar structural issues during that period. What has sent VN on a different trajectory though is that there was a massive social upheaval from the 1920s through the 1950s. This upheaval took colonial collaborators and authorities out of the political system, replacing them with people who had a sense of duty to the Vietnamese people. This sense of duty has guided Vietnamese development strategy. In the Philippines, there was no turmoil in decolonization. Rather, the US, who had appointed and collaborated with certain families to its advantage, and who has affected political society in a drastic manner by reinforcing regional warlords, simply gifted independence to those collaborators. This resulted in a political class post-independence that was dominated by these regional warlords and families. Philippine political actors have always been preoccupied with maintaining their position in this system rather than having a sense of duty to state institutions. Essentially, what the Philippines has been missing is a social turnover politically, and any popular movement in this direction has been hampered by political violence. The Philippines is probably the most violent democracy in the world because these political families that rose under the Americans refuse to let go of their power. Additionally, all the “development policies” have been focused on maintaining a veneer of progress while actually carving out protections for ruling interests (ie. Cory Aquino’s development policies) (for an analysis of the Philippines’ failings in development policies/reinforcement of the system, see Victoria Raquiza’s PhD dissertation). In order for the Philippines to change there needs to be a significant popular movement that votes out every single member of the Senate and replaces them with people outside that tradition.

It’s the holiday season and this is a special time for us all, but it is more so for me as it also marks the time I migrated to the USA. And this year is even more significant as it is my 30th anniversary of moving to this country. I have been blessed to be able to build a life for myself here and I am grateful. Not only for myself, but I’d like to believe that I’ve been able to positively affect the lives of more than 1,000 Egnyters, their families, and our alumni. The US is a land of opportunities and as an immigrant, I can attest to the fact that if you are a hard worker, capable, and perseverant there is nothing stopping your success here. In Silicon Valley, innovation is what keeps the ball rolling, and this momentum is ongoing because of the inherent nature of this great country to attract and provide the right environment for innovators. For instance, as #ArtificialIntelligence grows, it's unsurprising to know that immigrants have founded or cofounded nearly two-thirds (65%) of the top AI companies here, according to a National Foundation for American Policy study. As Americans, we are the builders of tomorrow. We do so by creating not unicorns but stallions who are sturdy enough to bear the responsibilities toward customers, investors, employees, and the community.

Each generation inherits the responsibility of protecting and nurturing the founding principles that have allowed America to thrive. As Innovation Gadfly's insightful analysis highlights, the #Innovation Clause of our Constitution has played an indispensable role in upholding an environment where creativity and risk-taking can flourish. However, the concerns raised about recent policies like the America Invents Act and certain administrative practices are sobering. They call us to reflect deeply on whether we are holding true to our constitutional commitment to empowering inventors and safeguarding their rights. This is not just about legal technicalities, but about preserving the very spirit of innovation that propels human progress. Too often, we take for granted the liberties and opportunities that allow pioneering ideas to be born and nurtured into world-changing realities. From Thomas Edison's light bulb to the modern smartphone, American ingenuity has illuminated our lives in countless ways. But that wellspring of innovation is now at risk if we do not remain vigilant stewards of the principles and nurturing environment that allowed it to flow so abundantly. Our #veteran innovators, who pushed frontiers with courage and perseverance, remind us of the human story behind each breakthrough. And those forging ahead today, from Silicon Valley to community makerspaces, deserve to have their rights as inventors protected and their immense societal value recognized. Fostering a legal landscape that strikes the right balance - protecting #intellectualproperty while allowing cross-pollination of ideas - is critical for America's economic competitiveness. But more importantly, it upholds our national identity as a land of visionaries and dreamers. Let us listen to the wise counsel highlighting these challenges, and renew our commitment to the core constitutional ideals that embolden each new wave of American innovators.
