I was lucky to meet Bill Gates who was an LP in the lead investor in my first startup — a fuel cell company. He shared his take on the battery production problem in a recent The Wall Street Journal article. Gates argues that “given the large number of battery companies, the majority of those technologies will be outcompeted,” and tied the challenge to not bring down costs rapidly enough. At Voltaiq, we get to support these companies in staying competitive. While I sometimes miss building hardware, there is an acute need for data-led efficiency. We can’t afford to hack solutions and waste dwindling headcount. We did that at my first startup, and it was severely limiting. As our industry reaches economies of scale and suffers from high interest rates, companies need to move quickly to catch issues fast and make informed decisions to remedy them quickly. Cutting costs has never been more critical. Modern data infrastructure and domain-specific software have set the new industry standard. As one of our customers who built the data systems for his company previously said "I want my battery engineers doing battery engineering." There's a reason why more mature industries like Semiconductors rely on robust domain-specific software tools to help them achieve competitiveness. They learned from their mistakes the hard way. The quicker we adapt, the faster we can solve the battery production problem.
