Linton Engineering, LLC 20th Anniversary Celebration Team Spotlight   𝐂𝐡𝐮𝐧𝐠𝐟𝐮 𝐘𝐚𝐧𝐠, 𝐏𝐄 Senior Structural Engineer Linton Team Member since 2022 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐥𝐞𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐭𝐨 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐞𝐥𝐝 𝐨𝐟 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠? I have been a huge fan of the Eiffel Tower since I was a child. The idea that structures can shape the world has always fascinated me, especially how engineering brings architectural designs to life. This passion motivated me to pursue a career in structural engineering. I love creating plans and following blueprints, but I also enjoy the challenge of problem-solving along the way. The field of structural engineering offers me the unique opportunity to combine discipline with creativity.   𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐞𝐧𝐣𝐨𝐲 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐋𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨𝐧 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠?   I take great satisfaction in the quality of our work. Our product speaks for itself. Each time we complete a project as a team, I feel a sense of fulfillment and have complete confidence in what we deliver to our clients.   𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐦 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐝 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬?   Since joining LE in early 2022, I have observed significant changes in not only what we have changed internally, but also in how we are striving to improve and adapt as a firm in our industry. This approach is the key to our success, and I wholeheartedly believe in it.   𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐛𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐟𝐚𝐯𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐋𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨𝐧 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐰𝐡𝐲?   My favorite project at LE has been the St. Anne's-Belfield School Randolph Hall renovation project. It was my very first completed project with the company. This "design-build" project presented numerous challenges, including a tight schedule and the need to preserve the historical integrity of the building. Overcoming these obstacles made it a truly rewarding experience.   𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐩𝐢𝐞𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐚𝐝𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐠𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐨𝐫 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐦𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐪𝐮𝐨𝐭𝐞?   "We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit." When I started my first job, this quote by Will Durant was framed and displayed in our kitchenette. My supervisor and I often discussed its meaning, and it deeply resonated with me. 🌉 Bridge Building: Not Just for Engineers! Last Wednesday at our bi-weekly management training, things got a bit... architectural! 🏗️ We were split into two teams and tasked with a challenge straight out of an engineering handbook – build a bridge across two tables, sturdy enough to hold 2 pound coins. Team Neil, Callum, and yours truly took on the mighty Lewis and Nathan. And guess what? We won! 🏆 Our bridge wasn’t just a marvel of budget engineering (talk about cost-effectiveness!), but it actually worked – unlike some flat-pack furniture I won’t name... So, what did we learn? Teamwork makes the dream work, especially when that dream involves not dropping coins into the abyss between tables. This four-storey development, boasting ample office space and two levels of underground parking, stands as a testament to WCE's dedication to engineering excellence. What sets this project apart? It's built on foundations and columns from a previous project that had been abandoned. Rather than viewing this as a limitation, our team at WCE took it as a challenge. We're leveraging our expertise in Structural and Civil Consultancy Services to breathe new life into these pre-existing structures. This is testament to our commitment to overcoming complex engineering challenges. Growing up, my parents had a strong influence on me. My father studied mechanical engineering and my mother pursued architecture in college. Although they didn't end up working in those fields professionally, their passion for design and organization rubbed off on me. They would frequently rearrange the furniture and encourage me to organize my bedroom. I always liked sketching and dreamed of becoming an architect to create beautiful buildings. However, as I progressed through school, my interest in math and science grew stronger. This led me to pursue a degree in Architectural Engineering at Penn State. Now, I design building structures and contribute to architectural design. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐞𝐧𝐣𝐨𝐲 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐋𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨𝐧 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠? I enjoy the level of responsibility and ownership I am given on projects at LE. Our leadership provides unwavering support, allowing me to take charge and make meaningful contributions. They are always available to listen to concerns or issues that arise during projects. Engaging in whiteboard discussions with the leadership at LE has been particularly enjoyable, as it allows us to tackle problems and find solutions together.  The firm places a strong emphasis on maintaining a healthy work-life balance, which I greatly appreciate. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐛𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐟𝐚𝐯𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐋𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨𝐧 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐰𝐡𝐲? The Chevy Chase Club Taproom renovation project holds a special place in my heart. This project is scheduled to break ground in early 2024. I had the opportunity to work with great clients who truly valued our efforts. 🚧 As a structural engineer, navigating the complex world of construction projects often feels like walking through a mythical landscape. 🌄 Today, I was informed about some "frictions" between the builder and the architect on one of our current projects at Ergodomus Timber Engineering. It immediately brought to mind an image: me, the engineer, walking through a barren land, with the daunting shadows of giant spiders on one side and dragons on the other. In this metaphorical Middle Earth, the spiders represent the intricate web of technical challenges, while the dragons symbolize the fiery debates of design and vision. And there I am, in the middle, striving to balance these formidable forces with the grace of Gandalf and the resilience of Frodo. Just like in any epic tale, collaboration and understanding are key. As we journey through this project, my role is not just about structures and calculations, but also about bridging gaps and finding harmony between the different realms of construction.
