Meet our intern, John Trejo-Chavez! He was an invaluable member of our retail studio team this summer. Here’s a little more about John: 1️⃣ What college do you attend? I am a graduate of Greenville Technical college with an associate degree in architectural drafting. I am currently a third-year architecture major at Clemson University College of Architecture, Art and Construction. 2️⃣ What year will you graduate from Clemson? I plan to graduate in May 2024. 3️⃣ Where are you from? I am from Greenville, South Carolina, and I graduated from Greenville High School. 4️⃣ What are some of your biggest influences? I have always been interested in art, some of my greatest influences are artist. Notably Pablo Picasso, the greats from the Renaissance, Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, and Caravaggio just to name a few. 5️⃣ How do you typically approach problem-solving? When approaching a problem, I like to use an interative process. Many thanks to Make for organising, sponsoring, and facilitating the event last week, and to all the speakers, and the delegates for an excellent discussion. The lively and informative discussion covered many areas including the relationship between the built environment, the digital environment, learning, teaching and social activities, the importance of flexible outdoor space (the value of which was reinforced during COVID) and the key elements of a successful 'sticky campus'. The discussion also emphasised the importance of Post Occupancy Evaluations and sharing the outcomes, the complexity of university decision-making and stakeholder engagement, and the recognition that every university will have different priorities and need different solutions. The discussion also considered links between universities and their external communities, while Make, values its role as part of the Fitzrovia community. The discussion also explored the importance of designers and university estates working close together so that new buildings and landscapes are easily and well-maintained and Zero Carbon strategies are achieved, and how flexible well-designed buildings can respond to the fast-changing world. This endeavor was exceptional in its composition, with a staggering 90% reliance on concrete construction, reflecting the precision and innovation required for such a project. On the other hand, my involvement in the public facility sphere led me to contribute to the creation of a one-of-a-kind Ambulatory Surgical Centre, a groundbreaking endeavor that represents the pinnacle of healthcare infrastructure innovation and underscores my ability to excel in complex, pioneering projects. My path, from meticulously choosing my course in Building Technology to hands-on internships in dynamic residential construction and public facilities erection, has fortified me with diverse experiences: - Adaptability: I have not only embraced challenges but thrived under the pressure, rapidly absorbing intricate industry knowledge. - Fast Learning: I have proven that learning is not just a process; it is a skill. Hello, I just thought about sharing a project I did for an internship opportunity last year. It is a conceptual design of a shading unit inspired by nature. Utilizing the biomimicry concept to respond to our climate actively, this conceptual design stands as a testament to our intrinsic connection with the natural world. As a tutor in the graduation project staff team in my department this year, I found that a lot of students are exploring the various possibilities of designing the envelope of their buildings in response to different aspects, especially the climatic one. So, I think this might be inspiring. I believe, as architects, we are not merely creators but also humble students of nature's grandeur. We should listen more to its whispers and weave its wisdom into our creations.
