😶The systematic harassment of journalists as a way to curtail press freedoms Much of the discussion about freedom of expression in Brazil has been brought to the fore — and distorted — by the country’s far-right, focusing on Supreme Court decisions and government initiatives to combat fake news about public policies. But one strategy that is highly corrosive to this fundamental guarantee — and, consequently, to democracy itself — has been in full swing, albeit omitted from the broader public debate. This is so-called judicial harassment, which seeks to intimidate journalists disclosing information of public interest — and the far-right has much to do with this phenomenon. 🔗Read more in our full article by Isabela Cruz here 👇 https://lnkd.in/dfNXtN2M #PressFreedom #SupremeCourt #Journalism #Brazil

The abusive use of legal procedures to silence journalists and media outlets is big threat for freedom of expression and for democracy itself, in Europe as in other regions of the world. This is why, as the European institutions move to formally approve the EU anti-SLAPP Directive and the Council of Europe anti-SLAPP recommendation, national authorities should take all necessary measures to ensure that journalists are not silenced by these vexatious lawsuits, in line with European standards. https://lnkd.in/gHDvCp9Y

Harming journalists is harming the foundations of democracy! Last Saturday, Haaretz photographer and journalist, Itai Ron, was falsely arrested while attempting to cover a violent arrest that included strangling a demonstrator. Recently, we have received many documentations attesting to an unacceptable phenomenon of police violence against journalists and photojournalists, including false arrests and use of force, failure to protect them from attacks, disproportionate infringement of freedom of expression, press coverage, and the public's right to information, all in violation of the law and police procedures. The police must prevent harm to the welfare and bodies of journalists, and this duty applies even more strongly when it comes to protecting the work of press coverage, in light of the social interest in the existence of a free press and the centrality of freedom of the press in a democratic society. We demand that the Attorney General and the Police Commissioner issue an unequivocal instruction to all police officers to act in accordance with the procedures and refrain from restricting freedom of expression and freedom of the press. On this International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists, I want to emphasize the critical role that journalists play in our society. Their dedication to seeking and reporting the truth often puts them in harm's way, and it's our collective responsibility to ensure their safety and hold those who seek to silence them accountable. Journalists are the guardians of truth, bringing transparency and accountability to our communities, governments, and institutions. Their work is instrumental in fostering informed and responsible citizenship. Unfortunately, journalists face numerous challenges, including threats, violence, and even loss of life, as they go about their essential work. Impunity for crimes against journalists is an alarming issue that must be addressed. Today, we unite to raise awareness and demand justice for those who have been targeted for their commitment to reporting the truth. Let's remember that a free press is one of the cornerstones of a democratic society. It's crucial for us, as a society, to ensure that journalists can carry out their duties without fear of reprisal. This means advocating for stronger legal protections, supporting organizations dedicated to journalist safety, and condemning any acts of violence or intimidation against them. I invite everyone to join hands in this important cause. Together, we can make a difference and work towards a world where journalists can do their job without fear, and where impunity for crimes against them becomes a thing of the past.

While you were sleeping your way through life.........."Australia might not be unique in its management of nosy reporters, but it is an outlier. Since 9/11, politicians here have passed at least 92 separate pieces of national security legislation – more than any other country on Earth. Among them are laws that make it an offence for some public servants to speak to journalists without authorisation, and that make it all but impossible for journalists to protect their sources. We are also the only liberal democracy in the world without any broad legislated protection for media freedom. There is precious little in our statutes – and precious little in our constitution – that recognises and protects it. These problems don’t end with the government. The robo-debt inquiry also revealed that some compliant journalists allowed themselves to become propagandists for the government, lapping up convenient drops about “welfare cheats” that helped spin the official line. This compliance can never be good in a world where the journalist’s first responsibility is to question and challenge authority. The situation is so serious that in 2019, after the Australian Federal Police raided journalists from two news organisations, The New York Times suggested, “Australia may well be the world’s most secretive democracy”."" https://lnkd.in/gRRD4ePJ

Every year, journalists are subjected to violence for carrying out their essential work. Journalism stands as a cornerstone for the protection of human rights, and the consolidation of democracy - yet it remains a dangerous and too often deadly profession. 94 journalists and media workers, including 9 women, have been killed in 2023. How can we work towards creating a safer environment for journalists and ensuring that justice is secured when crimes are committed against them? One way to increase pressure on states to improve the situation for journalists, ensure adequate redress and reduce violence is through legal action. Since our foundation in 2008, Media Defence have been litigating and financially supporting cases of violence against journalists before domestic and regional courts in over 100 countries across the world. We do so to challenge the culture of impunity in which powerful actors commit these attacks. You can read more about how we are combatting impunity for violence against journalists, and the cases we've taken internationally, here: https://bit.ly/4avoIAY #journalismisnotacrime #MediaDefence15 #impunity

SAD DAY! MIPC DENOUNCES KILLING OF JUMALON We, the members of Mindanao Independent Press Council Inc. (MIPC Inc.) are deeply saddened with the brutal and barbaric killing of Mr. Juan Jumalon, a prominent independent community Radio Broadcaster in Calamba, Misamis Occidental. According to initial police report, the 57-year old broadcaster was shot and killed inside his own radio station, 94.7 Calamba Gold FM, inside his residence at 5:35 a.m. on November 5. Despite immediate efforts to seek medical treatment, Mr. Jumalon was pronounced dead on arrival at Calamba District Hospital. The motive for this heinous act remains under investigation. We express our deepest concern and unequivocal condemnation of this brazen act of violence against a member of the media. Attacks on journalists are not only attacks on the individuals themselves but are a grave assault on the fundamental principles of human rights, press freedom, and democracy itself. Such acts have become notably frequent in this country, and no matter how many journalists are killed in the name of freedom of expression, it remains a fact that this barbarity has no place in a just and civilized society. We call upon the relevant authorities to take immediate and resolute action in response to this tragedy. It is imperative that a thorough and impartial investigation be conducted to identify and bring the perpetrator(s) to justice. This incident underscores the importance of ensuring the safety and security of journalists in the Philippines and the need for measures that prevent such acts from recurring. We urge the authorities to commit to safeguarding the lives and well-being of journalists, who play a vital role in upholding transparency and accountability in our society. Regrettably, the Philippines has witnessed a concerning trend of media killings over the years. Journalists and media workers continue to face significant risks in the course of their work, often being subjected to threats, harassment, and violence. Such incidents not only harm individual journalists but also have a chilling effect on the media's ability to fulfill its essential role in a democratic society. The overall state of media safety in the Philippines remains a pressing concern. Journalists must be allowed to carry out their work without fear of violence, intimidation, or reprisals. It is crucial for the authorities, civil society, and the international community to work collaboratively in addressing these challenges, ensuring the safety of journalists, and upholding the principles of press freedom and free expression. We extend our condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Mr. Juan Jumalon and stand in solidarity with the media community in the Misamis Occidental during this difficult time. We call for swift action to bring justice to those responsible for this senseless act and to reinforce the protection of journalists in the country. Refer to: Editha Z. Caduaya President-09171508377
