Most people think that cloud companies offering free credits is a good thing. Hot take: it’s not that simple. It sounds incredible. If you’re an AI startup in Y Combinator, you get $500,000 in credits. Your first half-a-million dollars in cloud spend are free. Who wouldn’t take that? You set up your infrastructure, get it running for a few months…and then the credits run dry. Suddenly, you’re faced with actually paying the bill. It’s IMMENSELY helpful when you’re starting from zero. But the sticker shock once you’re out of credits is a feeling too many founders experience.
