New NACC Member Research by Elise Kieffer, PhD from Murray State University 🖊️ This article provides background information on the establishment of an #endowment that serves specifically to provide experiential #learning opportunities for students in and around the university. This case study may serve as a guide for higher education programs in the #nonprofit discipline to promote both active #philanthropy and learning for students. This article provides an examination of student reflections following their participation in an endowment funded experiential learning opportunity with a hope of promoting this teaching method in other nonprofit and #philanthropic educational programs. The results of this analysis assist in the development of greater understanding into how the experiential learning component affected student reflections from their time in NLS 305. Additionally, analysis reveals how students understood and interpreted the real-world impact of their #grantmaking experience, in comparison to traditional classroom practice exercises. For decades, sharing a last name with an alum of a prestigious university was a surefire way to get a leg up in the college-admissions gauntlet — especially if they were a big donor. Since June, when the US Supreme Court struck down the use of affirmative action in college admissions, a harsh spotlight has been cast on legacy admissions, especially at Harvard. As Insider’s Ayelet Sheffey explains, these institutions say legacy admissions help foster relationships with alumni and promote an intergenerational community. But experts say there is an underlying justification: money. While Harvard has not publicly provided an exact breakdown of how much money it gets in alumni gifts, it reported earning 45% of its revenue in its 2022 fiscal year from philanthropy, which is the category that includes gifts from donors and alumni. In 2020, I had the opportunity to interview at the British High Commission for the Chevening Scholarship, where my panel struggled to grasp my career goals, particularly in simplifying national development reports like Voluntary National Reviews (VNRs). However, I remained focused on my vision. Today, my work revolves around improving global reports, and I have implemented several key strategies: Understanding the audience dichotomy: I have recognized the disparity between reports aimed at the educated and those intended for local citizens. To bridge this gap, I adopt a bottom-to-top approach, believing that "charity begins at home." In-depth research: I have conducted thorough research to identify the appropriate indices and their specific significance. This knowledge helps in effectively conveying the challenges, understanding that you can't discuss Duff without knowing Homer Simpson. Emphasis on verifiable information: I ensure that the data presented is both verifiable and traceable, eliminating bias and clichés. This approach steers away from stories of hunters and lions and focuses on factual evidence. Continuous self-improvement: I have embraced the idea that nobody is infallible, and the key lies in becoming a better thinker. I advocate for wisdom, substantive ideas, and unwavering competence. It's crucial to acknowledge what you don't know and strive for continuous education. Ultimately, when all is said and done, evidence will truly be the end of argument. The Consequences of Living with Regret! Have you ever said something and immediately wished you hadn't? Imagine if I could offer you an opportunity to take back those hurtful words. Just imagine the embarrassment you could have saved yourself and the hurt you could have spared the other person. As adults, we all make mistakes, but let's think about how difficult it is for our children, who are still learning about consequences and life experiences. This is where second chances come into play. They can make all the difference in education and provide a moment to pause for critical thinking. It's crucial for non-profit organizations and governments to come together and intervene before it's too late. So, let's ask ourselves, what side of history will we look back on 5-10 years from now?
