The art market in a nutshell with SOPHIE NEUENDORF 💡 While admiring Max Pechstein's or Karin Kneffel's paintings at HIGHLIGHTS, one might overlook the intricacies of the art market. However, insights from industry analysts shed light on its pulse. According to the Art Basel-UBS Report, global art sales in 2023 reached $64.4 billion, cooling by 4 percent, as Sophie Neuendorf, Vice President of artnet's Art Price Database, notes. Despite this, transactions surged, indicating sustained demand for art. Notably, the greatest activity occurred in the $100,000 to $500,000 price range, signaling robust interest. Neuendorf attributes this vigor to a wealth of fresh artworks in contemporary and post-war art, rejuvenating the market. Furthermore, the newfound appreciation for female artists, exemplified by Yayoi Kusama, is promising. However, ultra-contemporary artists experienced a 26 percent decline in sales, reflecting a shift towards established names amid political and financial uncertainties. As Neuendorf wisely advises, "buy for passion but with an investment view," urging collectors to balance emotional connection with cautious investment decisions. The Resurgence of Figurative Art: A Spotlight on the Salon de Refusées The Salon de Refusées exhibition in Berlin is a resonant call for the recognition of art's pivotal role in contemporary discourse. Echoing the revolutionary spirit of the historic 1863 Parisian Salon des Refusés, the showcase breathes life into works once shunned by established art circles. Figurative art, one of the heartbeats of this exhibition, stands testament to the human - and in this case female - form's power and the stories it tells. Each brushstroke and contour by artists such as Julia Apostolidou, Laura Aranda, Alice Cuenot, cornelia es said, Elina Evstig, Maja Neuhaus, Sara Owusu-Ansah, Lena Snow, Leigh Witherell, and Jingwen Yao unfolds a narrative deeply interwoven with personal and collective experiences. The significance of figurative art has been profound throughout history. It has the power to confront, comfort, and challenge. From the Renaissance's celebration of the human form to modernism's critical reflections on the self, figurative art has consistently mirrored society's complexities. In keeping with the spirit of its Parisian predecessor, the Salon de Refusées is a declaration that art transcends boundaries and rejections. It's a communal canvas where the once excluded are now exalted, and the discourse on art's purpose and place is vividly alive. This exhibition is not a mere collection of works; it's a vibrant conversation spanning centuries and continuing today. For a deeper dive into the essence of figurative art and its unyielding voice, join us at the Salon de Refusées. #ArtHistory #figurativeart #artexhibition #contemporaryart #SalondeRefusees #artisticexpression #ArtRevolution #BerlinArtScene #ArtisticDefiance #HumanFormArt

Ephemeral design, within the realm of design studies, encompasses the exploration and analysis of design's dynamic and transient nature as it unfolds across different periods and contexts. It involves examining the temporal aspects of design, such as its temporal relevance, changing aesthetics, and shifting cultural influences. By studying ephemeral design, one gains a deeper understanding of the intricate interplay between design and its temporal context, allowing for insights into the evolution, trends, and societal impacts of design practices over time. Moreover, ephemeral design serves as a valuable educational tool, facilitating critical thinking, historical analysis, and the development of a nuanced perspective on design's historical trajectory and its contemporary manifestations.

What does prioritizing cultural expression in exhibition design beyond colonial constructs look like? The First Americans Museum (FAM) is reimagining exhibition design to reflect Indigenous creativity, values, and aesthetics. In this free article from Exhibition journal, co-authored by Adrienne Lalli Hills and Margaret Middleton, learn why exhibition designers are influenced by the "colonial imagination"—and how FAM staff are working to disrupt "wonder cabinet" and "white cube" methods of presenting collections of Indigenous cultural materials. https://lnkd.in/gbCxkWWt Don't yet subscribe to Exhibition? https://lnkd.in/eeP-3ERG On the ground "Today’s the big day: Art Basel opens to its earliest, VIP guests with its famous, champagne breakfast followed by an exclusive preview of the choicest artworks that some 285 participating galleries have brought to the fair. At least, that is how things have generally gone over the years. A debate has been brewing over whether the fair’s attempts to appeal to a broader public (see: Art Basel merch and VIP passes being for sale) could chip away at the marquee fair’s core raison d’etre: bringing “the best art” to the world’s leading collectors, as I’ve been reminded about a half dozen times since arriving in Basel. If the fair is less exclusive and, on top of that, less exciting since it’s common practice for galleries to pre-sell large chunks of their booths, might the world’s top collectors content themselves with regional fairs elsewhere? Add to this that prices on the primary market are at all-time high amid a potential market correction, and one could stand to reason that Art Basel may not hold the place it once did even five years ago. The answer seems to be far from simple. And from the sounds of conversations ahead of the fair’s opening, many on the ground, myself included, don’t seem to think so. But the week is still young. At satellite fair Liste, Los Angeles dealer Chris Sharp said he had never experienced such a high quality of top, international collectors at a single fair. As for his solo booth, featuring gestural paintings of owls by Berlin-based artist Laura Larraz, only one piece remained available by Monday evening. But Liste is not Art Basel, though the crowd certainly overlaps, and folks like the mega-collecting Rubells were spotted. Always a good sign. While dining last night at one of two, long white-clothed banquet tables in the Safran Zunft’s 500-year-old guild hall, courtesy of blue-chip dealer Thaddaeus Ropac, a collector reiterated that it would take far more than a soft market to dethrone Art Basel—no other fair even comes close. As a stream of PR emails report what sold on day one over the next several hours, we might just have a better picture of where things stand." Devorah Lauter, Contributing Editor ARTNews
