People who know me, knows I love hitting the gym. 🏋️♂️
Couple of days ago, I witnessed a scene that left an indelible mark on my perspective, both professionally and personally.
There was this individual, engrossed in doing a chest press.
However, something was off - his form was, for lack of a better word, atrocious.
Now, anyone who knows me is aware that I have a bit of a penchant for helping others, especially in the gym. Just as I was about to step in, another gym-goer beat me to it, offering advice to correct the poor chap's form.
What happened next was both surprising and enlightening.
The man, rather than being grateful, retorted with irritation, “I am a gym trainer here!”😡
That statement echoed in my head, not because of the irony, but because it mirrored a similar attitude I often encountered in my professional sphere.
In the world of marketing, titles like “Head of Marketing,” “Director of Marketing,” and even “Chief of Marketing” are quite common.
But what struck me was how often individuals holding these titles, much like the gym trainer, assume they know all there is to know, blinding themselves to the fundamentals.
This incident reminded me of a profound quote by Mr. Miyagi (Karate Kid): “You can never fill a cup which is already full.” 🍵
It's a simple yet powerful reminder that in marketing, as in life, the moment you believe you know everything is the moment you close yourself off to learning.
It's about keeping that cup empty, ready to be filled with new knowledge, insights, and perspectives.
So, whenever I'm strategizing a campaign or brainstorming with my team, I remember that day at the gym.
It serves as a humbling reminder that no matter how high you climb the ladder of success, there's always something new to learn, always a way to improve.
This philosophy has not only shaped my approach to marketing, but also how I navigate through life.
