On Father’s Day we recognize the impact that all fathers, as well as those who take on a father’s role, have in our lives and our communities. They teach us valuable lessons and inspire us with their determination. To all the fathers on the Walbridge, Devon Industrial Group and Carlson Design Group teams, thank you for your dedication, sacrifices, and the positive influence you have at work and at home. Happy Father’s Day! #FathersDay #TeamWalbridge

The momentous and impactful work done by those before us must be celebrated in order to fully understand and appreciate what we have today. For Smoot Construction, this means not only remembering the work of enormous figures like Martin Luther King, Jr., but also the generations of perseverance and determination that came together to create a business like ours. As we enter our fourth generation of family ownership and round out our seventh decade of being black-owned, we embrace the immense pride in being able to be here today, to share our opportunities with others, and to continue the work of those before us. From the foothills of West Virginia and our humble beginnings as masonry contractors struggling to win work, to becoming the largest black-owned construction business in the Midwest, the Smoot family has lived its values and honored the work of generations and leaders before us. As shown in MLK Jr.'s powerful words, we must continue to work past our comfort, we must persist when it is convenient not to do so, and we must embrace challenge and controversy. We will continue to soar to new heights, to share our successes with others, and to lift up those other members of our community, so that one day, we will be part of legacy that our successors can look back on and celebrate. #mlkjr #martinlutherkingjr #blackownedbusiness #constructionindustry #mlkjrday

96 years of wisdom is worth listening to. Three of my favorite lessons from Blacksher: 1. Day 1 at WSR: If someone telling you NO doesn’t spark your interest then you best leave this office right now. 2. There is an ethical way to go about converting a no to a yes and if you are willing to work hard, get creative, and execute it usually leads to success for both parties and a life long friendship. 3. Never leave the office without a listing agreement. I still see and absorb the wisdom he passed down to others on a daily basis. Blessed to be with an awesome firm who cares less about occupation and more about people and relationships.
With great sadness, we announce the passing of our founder, Blacksher White-Spunner. Blacksher served in the Marines during World War II, then graduated from Auburn University before returning to Mobile, where he founded what is now known as White-Spunner Realty, Inc. He spent almost 70 years as a key player in the Mobile real estate industry, developing many of Mobile's residential subdivisions, commercial areas, and neighborhood retail centers. Even in the weeks before his passing, Blacksher was making deals and passing along his wisdom to his fellow principals and our agents. Blacksher leaves a legacy of humility, hard work, community development and service rooted in his faith in God to his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and generations to come.

Darity Jr, W. (2008). Forty Acres and a Mule in the 21st Century. Social Science Quarterly, 89(3), 656-664. Abstract: In general, a reparations program is intended to achieve three objectives: acknowledgment of a grievous injustice, redress for the injustice, and closure of the grievances held by the group subjected to the injustice. Three types of injustices motivate a program of reparations for black Americans: slavery, the nearly century-long Jim Crow regime following Reconstruction, and ongoing discrimination. Inauguration of a reparations program on behalf of black Americans preferably will be undertaken via legislative action at the federal level, rather than by judicial fiat. Logistical issues addressed in the article include the determination of the magnitude of the reparations bill and the criteria to be used to identify those eligible to receive reparations. The present-day value of 40 acres and a mule can provide the foundation for calculating the magnitude of reparations owed to black Americans.

In the attached amazing MLK speech he tells junior high students how to build a blueprint for their lives. What from his blueprint for life can we in CRE take and apply to our industry? He ask his audience to reject "burn baby burn" and instead to "build baby build" So what are we in CRE doing to achieve the excellence MLK calls for in this speech? Are we being the best at what we do no matter what it is? Are we building better apartments, office buildings, shopping centers, and warehouses? Are we bringing beauty, love, and justice into our communities through the built environment? https://lnkd.in/gf8qKNEc

The intersections of race and class or work and power has tantalizing effects on our understanding of history. It can reshape our appreciation of socio-cultural norms and the way we define the Gilded Age. Joseph Jewell's latest book White Man's Work: Race and Middle-Class Mobility into the Progressive Era takes the reader through the changing social structures caused by industrialization and Reconstruction, and the attendant anxieties these changes wrought among White communities. https://lnkd.in/eEZfmpAx
