Rhinos are among the species profoundly impacted by wetlands. The survival of these iconic creatures is dependent on wetlands, whether in lush Indian landscapes or vast African savannas. Ecosystems that foster biodiversity flourish in wetlands. Hence, wetlands conservation is not just an environmental issue; it is a commitment to safeguarding species like rhinos. From pollution to habitat loss, these vital ecosystems face alarming threats that demand collective action. As we work together to conserve wetlands, we benefit not only Rhinos but also countless other species that call these areas home. This World Wetland Day, let's reaffirm our commitment to wetlands. Wetlands can thrive through sustainable practices, community engagement, and international cooperation. The wetlands need to be protected, regulated and mitigated the effects of climate change. This past Sunday, the Ecolution team celebrated the beauty and diversity of our world's wildlife for World Wildlife Day. Here's why raising awareness around wildlife & biodiversity regeneration is so important in 2024: As a society, we rely on wildlife and biodiversity-based resources to meet our basic needs. This is why the current rate of biodiversity loss is concerning. The construction industry needs to shift from merely preserving biodiversity to regenerating it. This means installing landscaping that regenerates surrounding biodiversity in the built environment. Currently, the Green Star V2 rating system is creating a glimmer of hope: By focusing on awarding projects that incorporate regenerative design principles, specifically enhancing habitat, V2 mobilises projects to be active in creating sustainable legacies. In light of this, we renew our commitment to protecting wildlife and preserving their habitats by promoting building construction practices that: 1️⃣Support conservation initiatives 2️⃣Advocate for sustainable practices 3️⃣Encourage responsible stewardship of natural resources. I'm starting with Day 4 of the 'Blog-vent' calendar this year; and it's World Wildlife Conservation Day 🦒 , so I'm re-emerging a Sustainability blog from February 2023; back when our shiny new Sustainability Strategy was unveiled. I mentioned that by 2022, 60% of wild animals had disappeared over the last 50 years, with 1 million further species currently facing extinction. However, ecosystem restoration generates an estimated £5 to £22 in benefits for every £1 invested. We therefore need to manage our cynicism, stop inaction and take steps to make changes. 🌍 International Day for Biodiversity This year's theme, 'Be part of the Plan,' calls on us all to halt and reverse biodiversity loss. Mugie's diverse landscapes—from open savannahs and acacia trees to olive tree forests and the foothills of the Larogi plateau—provide a sanctuary for endangered species like Grevy’s zebra, Jackson’s hartebeest, and reticulated giraffes. Our initiatives, such as the Predator Project and the Cheetah and Wild Dog Project, monitor and protect big cats, while our community conservation education programs instill sustainable practices. It's always the right moment to make the right decision! Some salamanders are staging an incredible comeback, showcasing the power of dedicated conservation efforts. This success story, as narrated by Carlos Manuel Rodriguez, former Minister of Environment and Energy and CEO and Chairperson at the Global Environment Facility, is a testament to Costa Rica's transformation in environmental stewardship. This story is a powerful reminder that change is possible with vision and persistent efforts. Costa Rica's journey from widespread deforestation to a leader in conservation is inspiring, especially in our collective fight against biodiversity loss and climate change. This is one of several success examples found in the Second Global Amphibian Assessment lead by Re:wild's Jennifer Swandby and Kelsey Neam involving dozens of herpetologists globally. As Juan Abarca and Valeria Aspinall from Costa Rica Wildlife Foundation remark, even when salamanders were not in mind back in the 80s, they were protected by establishing incentives to protect land. This underscores the impact of making timely and informed decisions for the greater good. This beautiful leopard enjoys the solitude that is provided by the ecological corridor network on our Sappi land. Today is World Wildlife Day – a special day recognised by the United Nations to celebrate wild animals and plants, raising awareness about their importance and the need for their conservation. At Sappi we take our role as custodians of the land seriously, so in addition to the seven declared nature reserves and the 156 important conservation areas on our land– which are home to 28 indigenous forests, 41 river systems, 20 wetlands, and 67 grassland areas – we have a large portion of natural areas that form a network of ecological corridors. The corridors, which are managed responsibly, act as essential links between fragmented patches of landscapes that are crucial for the movement and survival of many flora and fauna species. We maintain these permanently unplanted corridors according to best practice, which includes minimising disturbance, implementing appropriate burning programmes, and controlling weed infestations, grazing, poaching, and medicinal plant collection. This forms just one part of our strategic approach to managing biodiversity on our land, following the Kunming Montreal-Global Biodiversity Framework which sets ambitious goals to stop and reverse the loss of nature by 2050. Our longstanding proactive approach to biodiversity management places us ahead of the curve on Target 15, which requires businesses to assess and disclose biodiversity dependencies, impacts, and risks, whilst progressively reducing negative impacts and increasing positive impacts on biodiversity.
