The 3 Ps of PR and Public Affairs (so you can quickly explain to loved ones what we do) 1) Protect: Brand/ org / employer reputation, license to operate, competitive positioning, policy, crisis planning and management, community relations. 2) Promote: Products, services, employment value prop., thought leadership, earned, owned, and paid media, investor relations, events. 3) Persuade (last but not least): Prospective/current clients and customers, colleagues, media, elected officials, regulators, investors, employees, leaders, investors, conference organizers, business partners, philanthropic and civic groups, general public.

This morning Carmen Boon, M.A. was our first guest speaker this semester in my "Public Relations: Principles and Practices" class at New York University. Carmen is the Vice President of Public Affairs at the Food Bank For New York City, an incredible organization working to end food poverty in our five boroughs. Beyond the empowering and impactful case studies she shared, Carmen left us with four helpful tips: 1. Be timely 2. Capitalize on human interest stories 3. Show impact 4. Know your target thoroughly What tips would you share with the next generation of communicators?

If you fail to communicate with your staff, you’re probably failing to communicate with your donors. If your staff struggle to trust what they are hearing from your organization, your donors are not far behind. Public relations means little if there’s chaos happening internally. Am I off base here? 🎤 Today at the Local Government Association of Queensland Civic Leaders Summit, I had the opportunity to share insights on budget communications with Rebecca Waters and Jon Guarna! 💁♀️ The main takeaway? Whether it's via digital or traditional channels, keep it human-centered! Most folks aren’t interested in the nitty-gritty details of the budget. They want to know how it affects their day-to-day lives. Budgets are complicated, but our job is to make them relatable and accessible. So what works well? Here are a few that I like 👉 colourful budget-at-a-glance infographics, short budget highlight videos, campaigns that highlight community stories about how council services, facilities, and funding have influenced them, targeted social media campaigns, proactive communication, multi-channel, multi-format rollouts and localised imagery.
