Volkswagen Group is intensifying its collaboration strategy in North America, both internally between departments and with its logistics providers. By doing so it is finding greater sustainable intermodal efficiencies on the inbound delivery of parts. As part of measures outlined in February, on 26 March 2024 Continental announced the planned closure of its Wetzlar and Schwalbach sites in Germany. Both belong to the company’s non-tyre Automotive group sector. The company will transfer the activities currently conducted at both sites to other Continental Automotive plants in Germany, relocating around 1,100 jobs to its facilities in Frankfurt and Babenhausen. Continental will cut a further 1,200 or so jobs. Following the anticipated conclusion of this process by the end of 2025, Continental will sell the Wetzlar and Schwalbach sites. Improving cost structure, strengthening R&D cooperation Continental describes these measures as a merger of the sites and says that by doing so, the Automotive group sector is “leveraging synergies, simplifying work processes, shortening development times and reducing costs through better utilisation of the existing infrastructure.” Philipp von Hirschheydt, head of Automotive, states: “With these measures, we are improving our cost structure and, in particular, strengthening cooperation in research and development. “In the future, we will make even better use of our strengths in the field of vehicle software and architecture at the competence centre in Frankfurt (which is now being built) and thus bring our technologies and solutions to market maturity more quickly.” Continental’s Automotive business sector plans to reduce the share of research and development expenditure (R&D ratio) to less than ten per cent of sales in 2028. By streamlining its administrative structures worldwide, the Automotive sector intends to reduce costs by 400 million euros per year. This visit was an opportunity to reaffirm our commitment, as a cluster and as a government, to continue collaborating with Continental Industry in driving the growth of Chihuahua and offering our support for the company's future expansion in our state. During our meeting with Continental representatives, Secretaría de Innovación y Desarrollo Económico and Autocluster Chihuahua we discussed a range of topics, including: We reaffirmed our commitment to working closely with Continental on initiatives that will benefit both the company and the Chihuahua automotive industry. We discussed Continental's plans for future growth in Chihuahua and expressed our support for these plans. We are proud of our partnership with Continental and believe that it is a key driver of success for the Chihuahua automotive industry. Catelsa Caceres, S.A. has just celebrated its 50th anniversary. Since joining Hutchinson Group 25 years ago, Catelsa Cáceres has become a key pillar of the multinational's strategy. The company's 235 employees, together with the 115 staff members in Tangiers who are part of the same subsidiary, manufacture a range of high-tech products and materials, primarily for the #automobile industry. It is a benchmark factory for car body, steering and brake system parts. More than 100 million units are produced each year at its facilities in Extremadura, 95% of which are exported to more than 30 countries. But Catelsa Cáceres is not solely a production centre for rubber parts and compounds. Its facilities also house a design centre dedicated to #technical solutions and the industrialisation of products that will later be manufactured in Hutchinson's plants in Morocco, Romania, Poland, China, Mexico, Brazil and other countries. We have take advantage of this 50th anniversary to talk with Jorge Gutiérrez, director of the company in Spain. Q: How important is Spain for the group's strategy? A: Spain has always been one of the keys of the Hutchinson Group's strategy. The area south of the Pyrenees offers alternative solutions to the outsourcing to Eastern Europe proposed by the French multinational. Cáceres promoted and pioneered the creation of the first plant in Portugal, which today is one of the world's leading factories for the manufacture of O-rings, and at the same time our main customer in Cáceres in terms of turnover. Following this project, two more factories were set up in Portugal, which is now a benchmark country for Hutchinson. A similar process was implemented in Morocco, where we were pioneers in creating a factory that today is managed from Cáceres, and that allows us to provide flexible solutions adapted to the increasingly complex needs of our customers. Other plants in the group followed in our footsteps, and today the country is one of the multinational's main avenues for expansion. Q: 95% of production is exported. What is your customer profile? A: We work with the major European car manufacturers (#OEM), such as the Stellantis Group (Peugeot, Citroën, Opel), Renault, Toyota Motor Corporation, the Volkswagen and others. We also work with tier one companies such as Bosch, ZF Group, Continental, LEONI, Yazaki Corporation and Sumitomo Drive Technologies Service.
