I wrote about Peloton's bumpy ride from hardware company to, increasingly, a fitness media empire — and the loyal fans at the center of it all. Thanks to all the Peloton fans who spoke with me for this or volunteered for the photos. Y'all were delightful and are the ones who keep Peloton pedaling. https://lnkd.in/gwFpBRps
Even in the worst part of the pandemic, I trained outdoors and didn’t buy into the trend of Pelaton. Fitness is a lifestyle and people that treat it like a trend are always struggling with fad diets and streak here and there but keep no consistency. I have no idea what would make Pelaton sustainable but creating AI Arnold, Rocky, Apollo Creed, Leonidas and the 300 etc would be very engaging to be trained by. Arnold screaming at you by name calling for 2 more reps no matter what, you could get into that bigtime. I don’t need some random avatar dude telling me to feel the burn.
Peloton has fantasies of having a mixed ecosystem of hardware and media offerings like Apple. The problem is they haven't looked at Apple closely enough to see it's not actually working great for Apple. I'm pretty sure no one can name a single Apple TV+ original series besides Ted Lasso and they are 9th in the streaming category despite being almost free at $5 a month. Apple Music has done a little bit better but honestly, they are number 2 in a category where it's essentially a two-company race between them and Spotify.
Nice work, Victoria Song. I think you did a nice job capturing what makes us Peloton fans so fanatical about the experience. I fall into the same category which is, I bought the bike in 2019 and since then have purchased the tread. My wife and I collectively have taken over 5,000 classes and frankly, we're just getting started :) I couldn't imagine my life without Peloton Interactive
This is a fantastic article thank you!
Great piece!

3moI was actually thinking of the future of Peloton as I did my 20 minute HIIT run on my Peloton Tread this morning. I've had my Tread and membership for three years now. I used to think that I hated working out, it turns out that I hate going to the gym. For me at least Peloton was the catalyst to improve my health and fitness. I gained a new love and appreciation for strength training and even ran a half marathon last year. But I worry that Peloton may suffer a similar fate as Blackberry. I hope they will continue for years to come - at least with the online & app content.
