Comox-based navy veteran, Corey Pettipas, fights for reimbursement after finding hope in ketamine-assisted therapy, a treatment unapproved by Veterans Affairs, but one he claims to be life-saving. After a 13-year service, Pettipas was discharged due to PTSD, a condition that worsened following a personal tragedy. Desperate for a 'paradigm shift', he pursued psychedelic therapy through a private clinic, incurring significant costs without any guarantee of coverage. Pettipas' therapeutic journey involved 13 rigorous sessions costing over $5,000, in addition to the travel and accommodation expenses. Only after committing did he realize the costs wouldn't be covered. Nevertheless, the impact has been incredible, with Pettipas sharing that for the first time in years, he has managed to regain emotional balance and enjoy life's simple pleasures. But, this newfound happiness is marred by the struggle to recoup expenses from Veterans Affairs. Despite the known efficacy of ketamine-assisted therapy and support from researchers like Shannon Dames of VIU, bureaucratic hurdles persist. Dames criticizes the resulting 'two-tiered' mental health system that leaves treatment inaccessible to many. It vexes me a little that none of the well-known organisations that promote mental health education ever seem to take the time to consider the Armed Forces Community and the thoughts, emotions and feelings that many will be experiencing during times like these. Yet this is a community that the NHS recognises as a unique population with specific health and well-being needs who also face unique health inequalities. So why isn’t every EDI lead in these organisations all over this? There are many sons & daughters who lost their fathers on D-Day and through the five years of conflict. Many Grandchildren and Great-grandchildren will remember a loved Grandparent who served in WW2 and has since passed. There will be those who served on more recent operations and perhaps lost friends and comrades who will be reflecting on those times. For millions of us, this year is a year of thanks and reflection. We've recently seen the 40th anniversary of the Falklands conflict. The D-Day anniversary is tomorrow. The 29th of June is Armed Forces Day, and the 11th of November is Armistice Day. If you are an empathic employer, MHFAider, well-being lead, mental health champion, or hold a similar title, please be aware that there are at least 1.85 million veterans in the UK with an estimated 1,110,000 of UK working age (aged 16-64) and millions of family members. They may also need your support, and it may not be obvious. I'd like to see these major organisations do better to support this often unseen and unheard population group whose mental and physical well-being is seldomly highlighted outside of the military charities and NHS England.
