For many of you it's summer vacation! For our grads it's looking for, Interviewing with, or entering into your first "real" Job. Or it's the scramble of going off to college and making sure you're leaving home with everything you need. In this busy season remember that the best leaders know when to prioritize rest and slowing down. Flying at a mile a minute may feel like the solution to your anxiety, but it only serves to fuel it. take time to prioritize rest. take a nap, take a walk, take a friend to coffee, take a book to a park. Whatever helps you slow down enough in the busyness to remember yourself, make sure you build that into your schedule.

🔙 A Decade Later: Reconnecting with My First Boss, Ryan Harris 🔙 Ten years can feel like a lifetime, especially when you're on a rollercoaster of career highs and lows. This week, I got to reconnect with the person who gave me my very first push on that rollercoaster—my first boss, Ryan Harris. 👥 Where It All Started Ryan didn't just hire me as an intern at Walgreens' Loss Prevention Department; he also gave me my first full-time job, just three days after graduation! 🕰 Time Flies It's incredible to see how much we've both evolved. Since retiring from Walgreens, Ryan has worn multiple hats—from flipping houses to advising on mortgages. 🕵️♀️ The Investigator's Edge Our catch-up also gave us a chance to reflect on how our investigative backgrounds have shaped our careers. Curiosity isn't just for cats—it’s an essential trait that's driven us to dig deeper, ask questions, and find innovative solutions in our respective fields. 🛤 Shaping Careers A flashback to when I was 19: Ryan talked me out of pursuing a government career in law enforcement and nudged me towards the corporate world. Best. Advice. Ever. 🤝 Why It Matters Sometimes, it takes years to fully appreciate the impact someone has had on your life. This coffee catch-up wasn't just a stroll down memory lane; it was a reminder of the lasting influence of mentorship and friendship. 🌟 Reconnecting The best part of our meeting? Realizing that while careers may change, the essence of good people remains the same. If you ever have the chance to reconnect with someone who's made a difference in your life, grab that coffee. It's worth every sip. ☕ #MentorshipMatters #CareerJourney #Reconnecting #LifeLessons #KDWorkforce #GrowWithKatie #Curosity #WalgreensAlumni

If Don Draper got your promotion… He’d run for the hills. Your big job is no Madmen fantasy, is it? You’re a top dog, but there are no impromptu afternoons off, No long extravagant lunches, Or comfy office sofas for afternoon naps. Instead, it’s open plan, or a cupboard pretending to be a private office. You’re on planes so often that you forget what home looks like. Lunch is too often at 3 PM, loaded with sugar. You barely make it to the loo twice a day. That's messed up! You’re the boss, so why are you hustling like a 20-year-old intern? More responsibilities should mean more freedom. More flexibility. Not to be a run-down version of a boss. Losing hair, gaining weight, being low in energy, and self-sacrificing. Blaming the region, your industry, impossible deadlines and insane KPIs, is just avoiding dealing. Fact is you create your reality, You could be happy in this role, Give it a shot. Take action. Be creative. Break the pattern.

¨Be Better Than You Were Yesterday Dedicate time to improving yourself. Read books about your industry, watch or listen to relevant career related and motivational podcasts. Plan out what you want to do to make an impact once the summer is over and it’s back to business as usual, and design a strategy to achieve these goals. Write them down and follow up on a daily basis. Focus On Your Wellness Take a break from the constant emails and work notifications and allow your mind and body to truly relax and recharge. Catch up on sleep or establish a regular sleep schedule. Feeling well-rested can significantly improve your mood and energy levels. Engage in activities that promote relaxation, such as deep breathing exercises, meditation, yoga or spending time in nature. Since the weather is nice, venture outdoors and enjoy the fresh air and sunshine. Go on a hike, jog, run or walk to maintain mental clarity, as well as your physical health. Pursue activities you enjoy, whether it's reading, writing, listening to music, playing games or creating art. Focusing on hobbies can be a great way to de-stress and express yourself creatively. Spend quality time with friends and family.¨

My newly minted 16-year-old daughter started her first official job Tuesday. She's working with a camp at Purdue this summer, and we're so proud of how she sought this opportunity with her typical determination and grit. She hadn't interviewed before and she was nervous, but she went after it and got it. Yesterday her response when she got home was to hug me and say, "I don't know how you do it, Mom." She meant the working, raising four great humans, writing, and, and, and. I try to be really transparent with my kids. I don't want to give them an artificial version of reality. I try to do the same with my students. I don't think we often have the real conversations that are needed. The ones that talk about how important choosing a life partner is (if you choose to have one) and the tradeoffs that I've had to make at different times in my career journey. Sometimes I do wonder what if, but not for long. I love where my life is right now. I have four amazing kids that were worth the investments. My husband has had an amazing career doing what he loves and adding great value at world-class institutions. And I've worked hard to earn where I am today. But it hasn't been a straight shot or easy. There are trade-offs and that's okay, too, for the journey I wanted for my family. The pay-offs so far have been well worth it, and sometimes I need to stop and remember that, too. But for those wondering and watching, it's work and juggling, and grit and grace, and a lot of help from a supportive family. Most of all it's knowing my why with a laser focus. It's also a constant reevaulation of balance (what's that?!?!), and what's important in this season. Just some random musings... What works for you? #Worklife #momlife #workingmomlife #modelsmatters #makeyourchoice

Our special places: 📍 We may leave. But we remember. I visited Tampa, Florida, over Labor Day weekend. Whenever I return to the area, I remember a different, formative time that shaped so much of the person I am now. In 2013, I moved there for a job in my former career. When I arrived from St. Louis, I lived alone and didn’t know anyone nearby. But, as a former Midwest kid in my mid-20s, I thought living in Florida sounded fun and exotic. In many ways, I grew up there. Over 3 years, I worked hard, wrote a lot, and learned even more. Frankly, I had bad hours. There was stress. My lifestyle was unhealthy at times. Still, many of my experiences there shaped my current views about the world. I lived through my first layoff. I freelanced for about a year between applying for full-time jobs. I tried to change careers but failed. On a few mornings, I walked along 1 of the shimmering beaches nearby and wondered where life was taking me. I learned about rejection. I accepted redirection. And I’m thankful for that. My life has changed so much since I left for Atlanta in 2016 to take another media job. But, when I think about my path, many of those evolutions—including my career change—happened because of the perspective I gained in Florida. Some places in our lives remain special, even if our view changes over time. #UXWriting #ContentDesign #ContentStrategy

Any guesses as to what my first job was (following my earlier days of babysitting neighborhood kids)? Here's a hint: I had to wear a pink uniform. Some of you may have guessed Baskin-Robbins, which was also called "31-Flavors," and you'd be correct. I sometimes wonder whether my adult lactose intolerance might have roots in those dairy-saturated teenage years scooping ice cream at Baskin-Robbins. Lately, I've been wondering what transferable skills I could trace back to scooping ice cream, a job that I previously had trivialized. At Baskin-Robbins, scooping ice cream constituted the bulk of my duties. This role demanded stamina and some physical strength, evidenced by my dominant right wrist growing nearly twice as large as my left wrist by the end of the summer. In addition to developing stronger wrists and arms, I developed communication and customer service skills. I still can vividly remember reassuring a stressed mother and her wailing son after the youngster accidentally dropped his freshly scooped neon pink bubble-gum ice cream cone on the floor. My first job taught me to communicate effectively with both coworkers and customers and to be responsible. Closing down the shop at night with only one other employee required teamwork and the willingness to roll up the sleeves of our pink uniforms to mop floors, wipe down counters, make sure the sales were all recorded, the money was safe, and everything was set up for the next day. This work required mutual trust and trustworthiness. It may be a stretch, but I can see how this "all hands on deck" teamwork, collaboration, and customer service experience helped prepare me for my later roles co-leading both an off-campus college travel program and an off-campus residential program. Maybe my first job at Baskin-Robbins was not merely about scooping ice cream, after all. 🍦 🍨 If you are willing to mine for gold within your past work experiences, you might be surprised to discover the seeds of leadership and teamwork in the humblest of places. #firstjob #earlycareer #Laurens30Day
