What are the factors for achieving success in a sports event? 🏟️ Organizing a massive sports event is a monumental challenge, but also an opportunity to witness the magic that happens behind the scenes. I had the privilege of being present at the series between the New York Yankees and the Diablos of Mexico last weekend, and it was impressive to see up close the incredible organization required to carry out an event of this magnitude. 🏟 The venue. The Alfredo Harp Helú Stadium met all the requirements to host a world-class exhibition series. With its award-winning design and all the amenities for fans, it made the experience unforgettable. ⚾ The protagonists. Having globally recognized brands like the Yankees and Mexico's top baseball team, the Diablos, might seem like a guarantee of success. However, it's the commitment and effort of both organizations that truly make the magic happen. 💡 The sponsors. All the brands associated with the event are key to its realization. Without their support, it simply wouldn't be possible. But this is a win-win relationship: brands contribute not only to making the event a reality but also to positioning themselves to attendees and gaining visibility in the sports world. 🎉 The fans. The Mexican fans created an unparalleled atmosphere, worthy of the major leagues and even more enthusiastic. This not only made the players enjoy the event but also left them eager to return to Mexico in the future. In 2021, the Sports Events & Tourism Association reported that the sports-events industry accounted for $39.7 billion in direct spending. Those numbers are now being updated in a new State of the Industry Report that Northstar Meetings Group is proud to sponsor. But the survey needs you. If you represent a destination, rights holder or sports venue, the association needs your help. Sports ETA is seeking industry responses through March 1 to complement the work that Tourism Economics is conducting to cover data in 2022 and 2023. Surveys should only take 10 minutes to complete and Sports ETA is offering some appealing incentives to those who finish the survey by the March 1 deadline or sooner. Super Bowl & NBA All-Star Weekend drive $100s of millions in economic impact. But most ppl don't realize who's responsible for driving these events like this. Big events like the ones happening this week are a small part of the larger sports tourism sector. In 2021, spending from sports tourism generated a total economic impact of $91.8 BILLION. Savvy cities realize the power of sports tourism and invest significant resources to bring events like this to their cities. Enter the "sports commission." Every city organizes it differently, with different purposes, KPI's and reporting structures. This group of full-time employees does everything from: 🔍 Identifying potential events to host 📊 Putting together bids for why the event should be hosted in their city 👀 Marketing, Promotion, and even operations for the event 🏨 Hotel and Gov't coordination; Volunteer recruiting and management And so much more. I've gotten to work with a few cities over the past couple of months to elevate their sports commission strategies, and the business is fascinating. For those of you heading to NBA All-Star weekend in Indy this weekend... The entire city takeover was coordinated in large part by a core group of 20+ employees in Indy focused on creating events that drive hotel room nights and local $ spend. (with some obvious help and coordination from the NBA) For those of you watching at home, know that what you see on TV is the simplest part of the weekend.

Throwback to my tenure as Sports Secretary, reminiscing our inaugural sports event - a groundbreaking football tournament in collaboration with JAGSOM (PEP)Sports Committee. Here's a detailed look at how it all unfolded: 1. Unique Collaboration: This marked the first-ever collaboration of all three IFIM institutions for a sports event, setting a precedent for future collaborations. 2. Hostel Premises Venue:The tournament took place within the premises of our hostel, creating a vibrant atmosphere and fostering a sense of community among participants. 3. Hotel Football League: Despite facing challenges with college sanctions, the event was creatively dubbed as the 'Hotel Football League,' adding a unique twist to its narrative. 4. Auctions and Player Assignments:   - Captains were appointed to oversee player auctions and management, fostering leadership skills among participants.   - Each captain was allocated a budget of ₹5000 for bidding on players, with bidding starting at ₹50.   - Team managers, captains, and a pep member collaborated to track the transactions, ensuring transparency and fair play.   - To maintain team balance, rules were set requiring teams to have a minimum of 8 players, with provisions for acquiring players from the remaining slots if necessary. 5. Team Formation and Fixture Planning: Following the auctions, teams were formed, and fixtures were meticulously planned for the 7-a-side tournament, ensuring a competitive and exciting sporting experience for all involved. 6. Gratitude: The success of the event wouldn't have been possible without the unwavering support and cooperation of the Hostel Committee and JAGSOM Sports Committee, whose dedication and teamwork were instrumental in making the 'Hotel Football League' a memorable and successful event. Reflecting on these moments fills me with gratitude for the camaraderie and teamwork that made it all possible.
