It’s a beautiful day in Williamsburg for the Electric Utility Fleet Managers Conference (#eufmc)! Stop by the Yale Cordage booth to see why we are the #1 synthetic cable and braided rope in the Utility market. #electricutility
San Francisco Bar Pilots (SFBP) gave us the opportunity to design three new station boats for their fleet, and we’re proud to report that the contract design is almost complete. To harmonize CARB-compliant equipment, pilot comfort, and a propulsion system with enough horsepower for pilot transfer, Glosten and SFBP opted for a battery-hybrid system—Tier 4 twin propulsion engines outfitted with SCRs and diesel particulate filters will enable the boats to transit to station and keep up with larger ships, while smaller gensets and a PTO/PTI hybrid arrangement will reduce noise, produce zero emissions while running on battery power, and support loitering and battery charging at sea.
This design exceeds California’s current emissions requirements, demonstrating the Bar Pilots’ commitment to environmental stewardship and making the vessels more adaptable to future regulations.

As Maryland blindly follows California's electric vehicle mandate, I presented a bill to delay the percentages of electric vehicles Maryland dealers will be forced to accept.

The Vancouver fire department's first electric fire truck, a $1.8-million Rosenbauer Group RTX, experienced a water tank leak shortly after its debut. While this issue isn't related to its EV technology, it's part of the typical challenges when introducing new vehicles in specialized sectors like fire services.
Meanwhile, Victoria's fire department is also set to receive their own EV fire truck, currently being transported across North America. The exact arrival time is unknown, but it's eagerly awaited.
Such challenges are key learning opportunities, helping to enhance future fleet designs. As fleet professionals, planning for and managing these eventualities is crucial for leveraging new technologies effectively.

A walk down #GardnerDenver technology lane!
ULTIMA Series
Traditional oil-free compressors are driven by a single motor connected to a gear box which drives both the low and high pressure airends. A gear box requires oil and creates friction that results in significant energy loss.
For Ultima, we replaced the gear box and single motor with two ultra-efficient Ultima motors powered by two inverters. Each Ultima motor is a synchronous variable speed permanent magnet motor powered by an inverter. The motors operate at up to 22,000 RPM and provide >97% efficiency.
With Ultima’s unique design, each airend stage is driven directly while the intelligent gear box continuously monitors and independently adjusts the speeds of each stage, ensuring optimum pressure ratios at all times. This results in a variable speed oil-free compressor with the highest levels of efficiency across the full turndown range.
In addition to the Ultima’s proven high efficiency, the air-cooled Ultima introduces a unique “hybrid cooling mode” feature to the compressed air industry with its option for heat recovery. This innovative feature can be used to capture up to 98% of the heat that is generated during the compression process and deliver process water heating, reaching usable water temperatures of up to 185°F (85°C).
With the added benefit of hybrid cooling operation, the air-cooled Ultima can operate in either air-cooled or water-cooled mode or a combination of both simultaneously, depending on the most economic cooling method for your operation at that time. Ultima provides up to 70% turndown, delivers low off-load power consumption (8kW), has up to a 37% smaller footprint, maintains 63-70 dBA noise performance and offers maximum heat recovery.
