How do you sustain a medication in the long run? The answer is too simple: accessibility and affordability. 71.91 % of the interviewed patients prefer the daily intake of a tablet. Last year, we saw such great treatments coming to the forefront, speaking of which gene therapy takes the limelight. Recently, innovators have been looking for oral drugs for sickle-cell disease. Now my question is: Can pills be used to cure sickle-cell disease, and can they match gene therapy? The answer to this is subjective. Gene therapy, such as CRISPR-based treatments like Casgevy and Lyfgenia, has shown remarkable effectiveness. But it comes with a high cost, with prices ranging from $2 million to $3 million per treatment. On the other hand, oral drugs like GBT021601 offer greater accessibility and potential impact on a larger scale. Why? Because they are: ⤷ Easier to manufacture ⤷ More scalable ⤷ Can reach a broader population Gene therapy directly targets the genetic cause of the disease in reducing pain and potentially curing sickle cell disease. But in addition to high cost, they come with side effects such as hair loss and infertility. --------------- While pill-based treatments may not offer the same profound effects on acute symptoms as gene therapy, their greater accessibility makes them more impactful on a broader scale. In #healthcare, the focus should be on achieving greater good for the majority. So, let me know your thoughts on this emerging controversy. Gene therapy or Oral drugs? Or both? #Genetherapy #AccesbilityInHealthcare
