GC Hiring Tip #2: The Importance of Industry Knowledge
Most of the time, your GC will need to have knowledge of your industry. Highly regulated industries such as pharmaceuticals and financial services will need a GC who has deep expertise in those industries and the regulations and regulators that govern them. Deep experience in IP may be required for a GC role at a company whose sole asset is their IP. Technology companies often require industry experience and expertise in specialized transactions such as Software as a Service Agreements and privacy/cybersecurity issues. A private equity owned company may require a GC with private equity experience.
On the other hand, if your company is not highly regulated, industry experience may be less important. You might be able to widen the candidate pool by looking at candidates from different or adjacent industries. For example, a retail company may consider candidates from the consumer product and/or hospitality industries or an industrial manufacturer may consider candidates from the consumer product industry.
