The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is awarding $90 million to a company that has promised to build what would be the largest solar project in the state (402 megawatts) on a former coal mine in central Pennsylvania. The award goes to Delaware-based Mineral Basin Solar LLC, a subsidiary of the Boston-based clean energy developer Swift Current Energy. The energy produced would be enough to power 70,000 homes. The grant is part of the $475 million the department is awarding to projects around the country to promote clean energy on former minelands. Other projects include a pumped hydroelectric storage dam in Kentucky and a solar farm in West Virginia. Funding comes from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, signed by President Biden in 2021. It's been a busy couple of weeks between the National Hydropower Association's Waterpower Week and CEATI's Hydropower Conference. As a result, I'm a bit delayed in sharing one of my office's largest communications products, our annual accomplishments report! Each year, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)'s Water Power Technologies Office publishes this report to give interested stakeholders an idea of the progress made across our hydropower and marine energy R&D programs. This report highlights 40+ successes from fiscal year 2023, including projects led by partners in industry, academia, and the national labs. This is by no means a comprehensive list but is meant to give readers a representative sample of the important R&D happening in water power, such as advancing environmentally friendly technologies, providing novel or enhanced open data, supporting in-lab and in-water technology tests, and much more.

Decarbonizing our power systems requires grid-scale energy storage options that minimize additional carbon emissions. Results of this National Renewable Energy Laboratory study suggests that closed loop pumped storage hydropower has the lowest life cycle greenhouse gas emissions compared to other energy storage options. #energytransition #storage #pumpedstorage #pumphydro #carbonemissions #ghgemissions #closedlooppumpedhydro #nrel

Uniper Secures Milestone Agreement with Deutsche Bahn to Supply 88 GWh of Green Hydropower Annually 🟢🔋🤲 We at Uniper are helping our customers decarbonize by supplying them with green energy. Therefore, it is a pleasure for us to announce that lately we have concluded a long-term contract with Deutsche Bahn for the supply of clean hydropower. Our history of collaboration with Deutsche Bahn dates back many years. One prominent example is the “Walchenseevertrag”, under which the Deutsche Bahn has been obtaining secure and sustainable hydropower from Uniper for over a hundred years already. In March 2024, we concluded a Power Purchase Agreement, further expanding our partnership portfolio with Deutsche Bahn across borders. More precisely, starting 2028 we will supply our partner with about 88 GWh of green power annually from four Swedish run-of-river hydropower plants over a period of five years. Our CCO, Carsten Poppinga, says, “Demand for green power is rising. As a result of the energy transition, we are not only decarbonizing our own power generation, but are also making more green power available to our customers today, so that they can meet their own climate targets. Renewable energy – such as the Group’s own hydropower – is one of the most important components of the energy transition. We are delighted that our PPA is helping to accelerate the decarbonization of Deutsche Bahn, because it is only by working together that we can effectively achieve the energy transition.” Read full press release here: https://lnkd.in/e_EFJqfB #TheBeatingHeartOfEnergy #Sustainability #RenewableEnergy #Hydropower #EnergyTransition #Decarbonization

Hear, hear, Lloyd James. Great to have attended this event, some very interesting talks. My key takeaways were: 1. Labour's attitude to energy so far seemed to be generally welcomed. 2. But industry wants further detail on the design of the cap and floor regime for long duration energy storage (LDES) as soon as possible. 3. Pumped storage projects are big, complex, expensive (with large upfront capital commitment required) and risky (with geological risk featuring among them). 4. Other challenges include competition for resources / contractors / suppliers (not only as between pumped storage projects but also with other large, complex projects - e.g. nuclear). 5. Despite this, industry is optimistic that if things are approached the right way (including contractually) the risks can be mitigated, challenges surmounted and new projects successfully delivered in the UK.
Pleased to be at the British Hydropower Association’s conference discussing future grid opportunities and the future of pumped storage hydro and long duration energy storage. Very exciting road ahead into 2030 and beyond with our clients in this space. #PSH #BHA #LDES #renewables #burgessalmon

Effective coordination is needed with the highest sense of responsibility #MOIT, localities nationwide, and the consulting unit responsible for implementing this initiative (Energy Institute). Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha instructs #MOIT and relevant authorities, and localities to carry out: (i) Localities in Group 1 urgently need to supplement and clarify information following the guidelines of #MOIT. Localities in Group 2 and Group 3 should promptly review, propose project lists, and provide information according to #MOIT's instructions, arranged in order of priority. Responsible localities are required to submit this information to #MOIT before December 25, 2023. (ii) #MOIT includes the urgent coordination and guidance for the consulting unit responsible for developing the implementation plan for Power Development Plan VIII. The focus is on transparently compiling project lists based on local proposals to meet the development goals of Power Development Plan VIII. The ministry is tasked with reviewing key projects, prioritizing renewable energy initiatives, and ensuring a comprehensive approach to legal compliance. This involves researching policy mechanisms for managing various renewable energy sources, including hydropower, biomass power, wind power, and rooftop solar power. The #MOIT is also instructed to review planning regulations, take responsibility for legal compliance, and report to the Prime Minister by December 28, 2023. ---------- VSE LAWYERS #VSE #VSE_LAWYERS #PDPVIII
