NOW HIRING: Looking for a 21 year old graduate to fill an entry level position. Must have at least 20 years equivalent relevant experience. Training, coaching and mentoring will be hit or miss. No feedback given on applications, successful or otherwise, even though we know they take a good few weeks to complete and we know it’s very hard to know what you are actually trying to sign up for.
· Re frame a tired and unimaginative narrative.
Lazy media headlines, sound bites and divisive narratives have pitted our generations against each other, fostering unnecessary conflict and misunderstanding. A pervasive narrative has emerged, unfairly labelling university graduates as lazy, work-shy, and unworthy of investment.
In this age of modernity and accelerated change, it is critical that we meet each other with empathy and understanding, working together to bridge these gaps.
· Graduates my experience.
I hired and got to work alongside, mentor and coach some brilliant graduates on the trading floors of Global Banks. It was an element of my role as an MD that I took seriously and felt great pride in watching bright young people develop.
· What we can expect from this generation, so much.
I will acknowledge a poor sampling technique but here is a window into six young adults who are studying or have graduated that I know. Law focused on Human Fertilisation and Embryology, Pure maths and AI application and control, Masters in aeronautical textiles, Human Surgery and longevity Science, Master in conflict Management, battery and energy technology development.
I want all of these things in my life.
· Don’t drop the ball.
If we fail to support, coach, mentor and invest in our graduates, we are failing them and ourselves. It is easy to forget what it felt like to be 21, on the cusp of adulthood, navigating the transition from education to the professional world.
· Generational investment and diversity.
Our Ego and experienced learning might make it hard to recognise that graduates today are equipped with a diverse range of skills that are essential in our rapidly evolving world. They bring fresh perspectives, innovative ideas, and a deep understanding of emerging technologies and global issues.
· National and Global Strategy.
These brilliant young minds, their intellectual capital is a national asset that can drive technological advancements, scientific breakthroughs, and cultural enrichment. Investing in their development is not just a corporate responsibility but a strategic move that will yield long-term economic and social benefits.
The secret is to get started. If you are a graduate or If you invest in a grad scheme, I can help there.
