I wholeheartedly support the idea of paying yourself a salary as a Founder. However, the belief that you can do so immediately upon raising funds, without having achieved profitability, does not reflect well on you. If you secure funding and are not yet turning a profit, paying yourself a £70k salary right from the outset will likely not sit well with any potential investor. Using someone else's money to launch your business? It may come across as opportunistic at best. It's crucial to have the necessary funds to establish your company, address legal matters, and have the cash reserve for when things go wrong. I often meet individuals starting a business with minimal or no capital at all but very high aspirations, it's like going out with empty pockets. This signals to me that they may not have prior experience in setting up or building a profitable business from the ground up. You need to get ready for this journey from the very start and have a runway of your own just to get things going. Launching a business requires both financial resources and time, and in some cases, substantial financial investment, depending on the nature of the product or service. When a solopreneur claims that all you need to start a business is an internet connection and a laptop, they likely lack the experience of founding a Tech Startup and are not qualified to give you such advice. Start up. There has been a lot of focus, hype and attention on start up eco system growing in the last few years. What I have observed is that lot of start up founders do not do the required reality checks, assessment and due diligence before taking the plunge which later turns out to be a bunch of surprises. Before starting anything and putting hard earned money into something a thorough research about the product / service you intend to offer, competition, market growth in the past, now and future potential/ prospects, investment required, expansion plans / scale of presence, expertise / technical requirement, manpower requirement required etc needs to be considered. Many promoters start because they faced some difficulty themselves and feel everyone out there would be in a similar situation. Blind assumption is fatal. Promoters start and go on to expand their business to other towns / areas very fast without establishing themselves in the area they started out. This results in fast burning of funds without generating enough revenue to sustain, stabilize and grow which results in offering substandard product / service and cutting corners where it shouldn't have been done which further leads to loss. In any business generally its not one or two decisions but a sequence of wrong decisions / events which lead to catastrophic results. Start slow, learn, fine tune, establish, dominate the area and become a prominent player in the market than blindly expanding to other geographical areas and remain insignificant. This wrong move then results in tight financial condition resulting in late / deffered salaries, difficulty in meeting day today operational expenses and payment to vendors etc which results in further detioration of business. This becomes a vicious circle and the promoter generally is never able to come out of it resulting in heavy debts leading to even closure of business. Therefore, it's always prudent to be genuine, realistic and practical before starting anything than just going with the flow looking at others. #startup #business #decisions #planning #duediligence.

How to Lose a Client (Part 1) Last year a long time partner (A) retired, having sold his business onward to another organization (B). The transition did not go smoothly. Now B is requesting payment for work that A was paid to complete. B is demanding payment, insisting that they actually did the work. I have no way to verify who actually completed the work...nor honestly do I care. I just do not want to pay a not insubstantial bill twice.
