At in Earnest we are (I am) a micro studio. I work on products I believe in, with people who care as strongly as we do about the impact they can make. To get a phone call from Ronan Ryan last week letting me know that the LetsGetChecked ImPress device has been awarded a 2024 Red Dot Design Award was a huge milestone in the journey of my practice. ImPress is a next-generation blood sample collection device. It adheres directly to the skin and uses a gentle vacuum suction to extract up to 600uL of blood in minutes. Really this award is for the vision, care and extremely hard work of the LGC design team, Taufeeq Elahi Diju and Kathleen Gahan. Taufeeq and Kathleen had the functionality, internal engineering and high level DFM established before I was asked to contribute. It is their years of fastidious dedication and graft together with the organisation's support of true innovation that is being justly recognised and rewarded. This was our second project with LetsGetChecked after the Phlebotic Assistant. We conducted in-depth primary research, a series of over 20 detailed user interviews backed up by physical prototyping and prompt creation. This #humancentered methodology allowed us to design a series of physical affordances throughout the exterior of the product. These features guide users and suggest usage semantically — an approach to design which is absolutely critical when the product itself is so new and unfamiliar. All of this work was done in true collaboration with Taufeeq and Kathleen, in essence a team working as one. 🎉I'm thrilled to share that my 1st research paper has been published with Sumitra Singh, Akshata Bhat, Priya Gupta! Titled "Blind Friendly Traffic Signal" which  focuses on creating a user-centered design that incorporates audio and tactile signals, making it easier for visually impaired pedestrians to understand traffic signals and make informed decisions. ✅ Our paper explores the design and implementation of blind-friendly traffic signals, which can significantly improve the safety and independence of visually impaired individuals. We investigated the current challenges faced by visually impaired pedestrians at traditional traffic signals and identified key features for accessible traffic signals 📌 Key Points: 1. Innovative Design: Features auditory and tactile signals to aid visually impaired pedestrians. 2. Safety Enhancement: Aims to significantly reduce accidents at intersections. 3. Accessibility Advancement: Promotes inclusivity and independence for visually impaired individuals. 4. Audio signals to provide real-time traffic information and instructions. 5. Tactile signals to provide physical feedback and confirmation. 📍 Hands-On Experience: 1. User-Centered Design: Gained invaluable insights by collaborating with visually impaired individuals to understand their needs. 2. Prototyping & Testing: Developed and iteratively improved prototypes based on real-world testing and feedback. At A+A fair in Düsseldorf, I profited today to test 13 exoskeletons. I am glad to see the evolution of this technology and the different exoskeletons. For me, exoskeleton are too more users centered design and not enough human centered design. I published last week a paper during the exoskeleton symposium at SELF congress my own human centered design method. The objective of this method is to replace human (and not user) at the center of the design method. It is complicated because it is very hard to not take account a use case and the probable future activity. But results is worth this difficult reflection. When I worked on this method for my current PhD and my project of new exoskeleton, i had a lot of questions about what is Physical assistance? Could you answer in comments?
