Celestial Navigation at Sea:
Calculating Position at Meridian Passage
One essential technique is celestial navigation, calculating your position at meridian passage, also known as the noon sight is still required at least two times per day:
Here's a step-by-step guide:
1. **Select Celestial Body**: Choose a celestial body for observation. The Sun is commonly used.
2. **Determine Time of Meridian Passage**: Find it in the nautical almanac.
3. **Measure Altitude**: Use a sextant to measure the altitude of the celestial body when it's highest in the sky.
4. **Correct the Altitude**: Apply corrections for factors like index error, dip, and refraction.
5. **Calculate the Declination**: Find the body's declination for the date and time from the nautical almanac.
6. **Calculate the Latitude**: Use the corrected altitude and declination with the formula: Latitude = 90° - (Corrected Altitude + Declination).
7. **Determine the Local Mean Time (LMT)**: Convert observed time to LMT, applying necessary time zone or longitude corrections.
8. **Calculate Longitude Difference**: Compare LMT with standard time to find the time difference.
9. **Convert Time Difference to Longitude**: Use the formula: Longitude Difference = Time Difference (in hours) × 15°/hour.
10. **Apply Longitude Correction**: Add or subtract the calculated longitude difference from the known longitude.
Accuracy and practice are paramount in celestial navigation. Proficiency with navigational instruments and precise timekeeping are essential. ⚓🛰️

ENJOY A BIG SHIP first thing and the rest of your day's smooth sailing
There's something about ships that floats my boat.
The romance and adventure of the sea.
The stunning feats of engineering.
The onboard discipline.
I even toyed with the idea of becoming a sailor...
...until a swan attacked me in a canoe in Interlaken in 1985.
So I stayed on dry land, but still completed my standard grade History project on Clyde shipbuilding...
...visiting the Denny Tank to see how engineers tested scale models of vessels like the QE3 against (scale) 100ft waves.
Anyway, it's been a pleasure to write in-depth about ships again recently.
To find out what it takes to run a ship-shape global fleet.
How real-time monitoring protects sensitive cargoes.
And why firms reckon AI can help with navigation and seafarer wellbeing.
So if you're in maritime marketing and need a writer who knows his oars from his l-bows, we should talk.

P.S. do you like chips and ships? Grab a fish supper from Valente's at Overton Road in Kirkcaldy and eat it at Seafield beach looking over the River Forth. That's where this pic was taken - it's like a ship car park.

Exciting news from Sat.One! As the exclusive distributor of enterprise marine LEO (Low Earth Orbit) services in Australia and New Zealand, we are thrilled to share a transformative update for the maritime industry.
Our latest CEO series video unveils how we're steering a new course in maritime communication, extending our reach 300 nautical miles off the coast. Traditionally, marine operations have grappled with limited connectivity, confined to low-bandwidth links, due to the unique challenges of the marine environment. Moving vessels and the constant battle with the elements have kept these sectors in a communication shadow.
But that's about to change. With enterprise LEO technology, we're ushering in a new era of connectivity at sea, offering up to 200 Mbps download and 80 Mbps upload speeds. Imagine vessels, from commercial shipping to fishing fleets, equipped with fibre-like speeds, enabling a surge in operational efficiency and crew welfare.
This is a golden opportunity for our resellers in offshore support vessels, remote-operated vessels (ROV), commercial fishing, shipping, emergency services, and private yachting. Equip your customers with the power to enhance crew connectivity, allowing them to stay in touch with loved ones, access entertainment, and ensure operational excellence with advanced technological capabilities.
As the One company that customers turn to for enterprise LEO in ANZ, let's dive into the future of maritime connectivity together. Explore the potential with Sat.One and set sail into a world where the ocean's expanse is no longer a barrier to world-class communication. Watch our video and discover how we're charting a new course in maritime technology.
