How to make packaging better, smarter and more sustainable? Visionary start-ups, investors, and industry experts from across the world gathered at Slush to explore this question at the joint Huhtamaki and Emerald Technology Ventures workshop. 📦 Panelists: Huhtamaki - Marina Madanat Technical Research Centre of Finland VTT - Ali Harlin Emerald Technology Ventures - Fredric Petit LVMH - Bruno Bavet 📦 Paradigm shift: All panelists agreed that sustainability is driving a paradigm shift in the packaging industry. Fredric Petit highlighted that this has been particularly apparent in the last three years, which is why Emerald launched a dedicated fund to support packaging innovation. It is one of the first venture-backed investment vehicles targeting the financing of innovations across the full packaging lifecycle. “We focus for instance on materials, how to move away from petrol-based materials to recycled, bio- or fiber-based materials, on how we can improve the functionality of packaging, and on design for end of life, but also on the digital side, for example, on smarter connected packaging, waste analysis and waste sorting”, says Packaging Parter, Fredric Petit. 👉 Read more: https://lnkd.in/d53pFuxu

SAVEGGY, a Lund-based startup founded by Arash Fayyazi and Vahid Sohrabpour🍀 , has secured €1.76 million in funding to advance its innovative plant-based vegetable packaging solution. Saveggy's unique packaging technology, which utilizes a combination of canola and oats, aims to extend the shelf life of fruits and vegetables with edible peels, such as cucumbers, without relying on conventional plastics. The need for sustainable packaging solutions is more pressing than ever, as the global waste from traditional plastic packaging continues to escalate environmental concerns. Saveggy's technology not only addresses the environmental impact of packaging but also tackles food wastage by potentially increasing the longevity of fresh produce. This investment will enable Saveggy to scale its operations and reach a broader market, including more stringent categories of fruits and vegetables, thus amplifying its impact on the food supply chain. The funding round was led by notable impact investors including Unconventional Ventures, together with LRF Ventures, Almi Invest and industry angels.

Accelerating the production of food designed for nature to thrive 🌱 As part of the #BigFoodRedesign Challenge, the Foundation recognises the importance of startups and small businesses as essential actors within the food system due to their fundamental role in promoting change, encouraging farm-level innovation, and initiating changes in consumer behaviour. To support these smaller businesses and help boost their progression towards making nature-positive food the norm, a share of over £500 thousand has been allocated to 19 participants that have demonstrated that the majority of their product ingredients are: 🌿 Sourced from production systems indicative of regenerative outcomes for nature 🌾 Lower impact, diverse, and/or made with upcycled ingredients ⚪ Their packaging is free from problematic materials and includes circular economy principles Find out more about here: https://lnkd.in/eCiWuvQK
