Now that it has been a few weeks since we attended Super Return 2024 Berlin, I have time to reflect on some key takeaways from the event. We met some excellent LPs and GPs in the space. Major topics that caught my ear were Private Capital Fundraising, VC's place in the ecosystem, and the AI Revolution. 1. Economic Headwinds and Investment Strategy: Rising interest rates, geopolitical tensions, and inflation concerns are reshaping investment strategies in private capital. Investors increasingly prioritize resilience, focusing on downside protection and scrutinizing financials to mitigate risks. Regarding the #venture, this rings true for mid- to growth-stage companies and less for early-stage companies, but LPs are looking for funds with the "resilience mindset". 2. AI Transformation in PE and VC: Artificial intelligence is emerging as a game-changer across the private capital landscape. AI is being leveraged to enhance deal sourcing, due diligence, portfolio management, and risk assessment, driving efficiency and data-driven decision-making on the PE side. For ventures, generative AI tools and the broader AI trend are creating an opportunity for a fourth technology revolution that will drive productivity and innovation in every vertical, not only technology. 3. Evolving Fundraising Landscape: Fundraising for venture capital has declined significantly, while private credit and buyout funds are experiencing record highs. With this said, for #venture, it remains a tale of two cities. The established managers, three funds+, are getting most of the attention and funding, whereas any fund with less than three funds under its belt and no meaningful DPI is getting less attention. We will likely see the venture asset from a dollar perspective grow, but the number of managers will remain flat or even decline compared to increasing over the last decade. 4. Good Companies bad Investments: "Soon managers will have to say the quiet part out loud: that they have some great companies in their portfolio, but they will be bad investments." - Apollo Co-CEO Scott Kleinman. This rings true for private equity and venture capital after the 2020/2021 overfunding frenzy. Many portfolios hold solid companies but at nosebleed valuations, making them poor investments. Managers acknowledge that mistakes from that period are just the start; they must prove lessons learned by realigning GP/LP incentives and detailing concrete steps to avoid future missteps. Simply stating we screwed up is insufficient, and managers will have to show they have learned from their mistakes even though that was the game on the field at the time. Looking forward to attending next year to foster the #LP and #GP relationships made at the event!
