A change of conditions for a building doesn’t just mean something such as a building that used to be a restaurant is now being converted into a clothing store. No, even warehouses changing what or how they store inventory in their rack systems can overcome the presently installed fire sprinkler sprinkler system/s. I know, I know…”It’s not in NFPA 25 so it’s not my problem”. Or “I didn’t inspect this system last year so how am I supposed to know the building or storage changed?”. I’ve heard it all before…over, and over, and over again 😒 I’m not stating that “this” building’s method of storage changed and that’s why the fire sprinkler system was overwhelmed and inefficient at suppressing the fire. Maybe the installing contractor didn’t design it correctly? Or maybe the sprinkler fitters who installed it didn’t install it per the approved plans? Or maybe both or all three happened? Regardless, after a hundred years of fire science, I think we can all agree that human error was the reason this building was lost even though it had a fully functioning fire sprinkler system installed. Thank goodness no one was seriously hurt or killed during the incident!

A little awareness can go a long way to prevent major fires and keeping our communities safe. This summer, keep these core fire prevention principles in mind: 🔥 Risk Awareness: Consult local fire or forestry officials to understand the current fire danger level and take additional precautions when needed. ⛽ Fuel Storage: Store gas, diesel and other fuels away from any ignition sources, including engine exhaust, sparks and cigarettes. 🧰 Spark Arrestor Maintenance: Regularly check that spark arrestors on chain saws are functioning correctly to prevent unintended fires. ⚡ Electrical Safety: Avoid any contact with power lines, poles or equipment to prevent dangerous arcing and sparking. Senior Environmental Public Health Officer at Harvard University & President & Chief Scientific Officer, IdentifyUS LLC
IPM Post 173: No rodent activity. Generally, zeros on any inspection reports are signs of real trouble. Zeros, however, can be the best numbers on service reports from pest management reports, particularly when they indicate ‘no rodents captured’ or ‘no bait eaten’. Those scores are misleading if the monitoring devices are inappropriately deployed. Because this rodent control station is not likely to be visited by a rat, the zero score on the report offers only a false sense of security. Pest management personnel should strive to site such devices in more appropriate locations and educate their clients that such devices should not be moved, damaged, or reused as doorstops, chock blocks, floor mat weights, or for other counterproductive tasks. #IPM #pest #rodent #rat #trap
