Alright ya'll I'm coming in hot today! Juneteenth matters to me. A lot. The fact that we have a federal holiday is awesome, however, June 19th is not the only day we have historically celebrated Juneteenth. In fact, it was always (as far as I remember) the teen weekend in June when Juneteenth was celebrated. Certainly we acknowledge the history and the day of June 19th, but as we all know, that date did not free all people and the history of when, how and why Black people celebrated during the teen weekend in June for so many years needs to also be acknowledged and understood. Let's be careful to not reduce Juneteenth to one day. It is a series of days. It is a movement. It is alive and breathing and important to remember the people who came before us, buying, renting and securing land simply to celebrate when they could - where they could - which was typically on a weekend. That history cannot be lost. This year we have the federal holiday falling on a Monday, but in 2024 it will fall on a Wednesday. I promise you that people will be celebrating the weekend before the federal holiday, and not only on the federally recognized day. I love the way Angela T. Tate puts it "[Juneteenth] is not just a holiday that is fixed and has one meaning. It has a multiplicity of meanings to people of African descent in the United States. They also see it as relevant to Africa, the Caribbean, and any other place where there's an African diasporic community. It's a continuous struggle, a continuous fight, a continuous place of remembrance." Juneteenth matters to me and I want to continue the legacy of the celebrations that happened over the past 150+ years, particularly on Juneteenth weekend. This year, Juneteenth weekend falls on June 16-18. #community #juneteenth #juneteenth2023 #justice #juneteenthcelebration #juneteenthweekend #diversityequityinclusion #people

Today, we commemorate Juneteenth—a day of profound historical significance and enduring legacy. On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, with the news that the Civil War had ended and that enslaved people were now free. Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, marks this monumental moment in American history. But Juneteenth is more than just a historical milestone. It’s a day to honor the resilient spirit of African Americans, reflect on our shared past, and commit to building a future rooted in equity and justice. It is a celebration of freedom, culture, and progress. How You Can Celebrate Juneteenth with Us: 🔹 Attend Local Events: Join community gatherings, parades, and cultural festivals that highlight African American art, music, and heritage. 🔹 Educate Yourself & Others: Learn more about the history of Juneteenth and share your knowledge with family, friends, and colleagues. 🔹 Support Black-Owned Businesses: Contribute to economic empowerment by shopping at Black-owned businesses and restaurants. 🔹 Become an Advocate: Advocate for policies and practices that promote social justice and equity in your community. Join us in celebrating Juneteenth this year! Together, we can honor the past, celebrate the present, and work towards a brighter future. #Juneteenth #FreedomDay #CelebrateTogether #EqualityForAll
