When you look at these photos what do you see? A community that is merely “surviving” or one that is “thriving”? When you zoom in on the second image and see families of the fallen joined at the shoulders with #Veterans at SVA NATCON in Orlando — do you feel sympathy and pity? Or are you filled with joy and hope, seeing the resilience and the strength of our #military community? When you see the men and women in the third photo — in red shirts with hands interlocked at the Team RWB Convening in Atlanta, do you see Veterans who are “broken” or a community that is #thriving? When you see the #military and #Veteran connected families in the last two photos at the US Open this past weekend — do you see a #community that is rife with “challenges” or one that has overcome them and who represent the very best of our nation? Let me tell you what I see. Actually let me tell you what I know… There is no stronger community. We are successful in the workplace. We are successful entrepreneurs and business owners. We love to serve and give back. We are living our very best lives as a result of our service in the military — not in spite of it. Since our founding, ZeroMils has been making connections and creating opportunities for these #truths to be realized and better understood. We have challenged for profit and nonprofit companies to go beyond being “military friendly” or “ready”, and the misguided narrative that we need their help to “survive.” All you need to do is look at the first photo to recognize the strength of our community and the potential upside that exists if your company creates a culture where military talent can #thrive. Today is #CivicPrideDay. People who have civic pride help their communities thrive and their hometowns be a better place to live. Civic pride can be demonstrated in a multitude of ways. For instance, tackling issues of public concern, shaping legislation, or other activities that improve the standard of living for or well-being of community members. Not only do Veterans love to serve their county, but community civic pride is also embedded in their DNA. Calling all veterans, serving members of the armed forces and their partners. Take a minute and consider your partner, and your family. Maybe you have children. Do you know what will happen to them if anything happens to you? Where will they live? What will happen to the schooling and education for your kids? What community will wrap around them and support them when they need it most? Will it be the community they are part of now? Sadly there is little information on the outcomes for the bereaved partners and children of Service families. Even less than the information on the Armed Forces. If you don't track it; you don't know if there's an issue; you don't have to do anything about it. Or am I being too cynical? In this week's podcast, we are talking with Jilly Carrell, "The Accidental Activist for Bereaved Military Community". Thank you for trusting us to share your experience and for all you're doing to change this. The support when there is a death in military service should reflect the service, commitment and oath of allegiance. You would think that ✅ Your family would be assigned someone to help with welfare and emotional support. ✅ There would be a joined-up after-service support ✅ Easy access to things such as dentists, doctors and schooling. For veterans, there is Op Courage, Fortitude, Nova and Prosper. Where do bereaved partners and children sit in terms of how they are supported and their needs tracked and met? Are they part of the Veteran Community? Seems not. They fall into no man's land. Not quite civilian, not quite Armed Services or Veteran. Isn't it about time the Office of Veterans Affairs looked at having an Op Families for the joined-up wrap-around service support? This country has been at war, peacekeeping on major exercises for the past 80 years. Things have to improve. The families serve just as much as the service person. 🔸🌟 Honoring Our Veterans Every Day 🌟🔸 On this Veterans Day, it is vital to reflect on the challenges faced by many of our beloved veterans. As we take a moment to celebrate their dedication and sacrifice, let us not forget that their journey does not end with their service. Particularly, black and brown veterans, who have contributed significantly to our nation, often face additional hardships after leaving the military. Sadly, a considerable number of veterans find themselves in the midst of homelessness, even after bravely serving this beautiful country. It breaks my heart to acknowledge that some of them are forced to enter the shelter system, lacking the stability they deserve. While a fraction of fortunate veterans can eventually transition to apartments, countless others continue to live in Single Room Occupancies (SROs), struggling to make ends meet daily. 💔 It is devastating to learn that 21 veterans make the tragic choice of ending their own lives each day. This stark fact paints a painful picture of the unseen battles many veterans endure, even beyond their military service. As we reflect upon these challenges with heavy hearts, it is essential for us to focus not just on this one day, but on the remaining 364 days of the year. 💙 Today, as we witness the generosity of restaurants opening their doors to provide free meals to veterans, let us ask ourselves: "What more can we do to support and uplift these brave individuals year-round?" While these gestures of appreciation are undoubtedly meaningful, our commitment should extend beyond a single day. Here are a few ways we can make a lasting impact and honor our veterans every day: 🌟 Advocate for affordable housing options and support programs to prevent homelessness among veterans. 🌟 Promote mental health resources and raise awareness about the struggles many veterans face. 🌟 Encourage job opportunities and the recognition of veterans' unique skills and experiences in the civilian workforce. 🌟 Volunteer with organizations that serve veterans, providing essential assistance and much-needed companionship. 🌟 Educate ourselves and others about the challenges faced by black and brown veterans, amplifying their voices and advocating for equality. Let us use this Veterans Day as an opportunity to reflect, educate, and take action. The past 3 days were spent sharing good times with great friends — leaders I’ve known since starting #HOH in 2011 — like Michael F. Kelly at USAA and Dr. Mike Haynie who founded #IVMF that same year. It was fun being in “the house that Mike built” for the very first time. So much fun, I only managed to get 3 pictures this first one right before boarding the plane in Syracuse. ZeroMils shared one theme consistently this week — It’s time to create #militarythriving cultures and communities. We shouldn’t settle for anything less. For corporations — Let’s elevate our brands so we are more than military #friendly or military #ready. While growing your company’s bottom line with military talent, it’s time to help #Veterans and #militaryspouses grow and #thrive in the workplace, too — by partnering with best in class nonprofits and helping them do the same in communities, nationwide. For nonprofits — Let’s go a step beyond helping #military and #veteran connected families #survive.
