What’s the truth behind the backlash against DEI? Let's stay confident in our DEI work despite any negative feedback loops—the truth is that our efforts are working! The comments are very insightful! Having experienced a steady chipping away of DEI endeavors, which were successful and well received by so many individuals, no one has a logical explanation why something that is beneficial, respected, and supported is ultimately shut down. Is it a fear of loosing “control” over individuals? Is it a fear of open dialogue…. of building relations? There is a lot of talk and presumed excitement about DEI, but events and programs that are evidence of individuals united around a shared understanding of respect - relations - reciprocity, are eliminated.

In my cup: hope for unity in our diversity, and for feeling I belong to the US although I’ve lived here since 2002 and have two teenage kids born here. The struggle is real but my cup is full.

You are right. I also think fear is driving the backlash. We are making progress, but fear comes from self preservation. The WIIFM syndrome drives the backlash. I love how you say we all benefit from this work. It is true.

Appreciating this perspective on the DEI backlash, Vernā Myers. There wouldn’t be a backlash unless it’s working.

Such an important message. Important to always reframe our thinking against negativity. This is a great example of turning a ‘setback’ into an opportunity.

Vernā Myers Thank you for your work. My EU colleagues say that if US companies want to work there, they will need to conform to their standards. Are US companies mindful of ex-US expectations as they try to dial back DEI efforts here?
