Africa's young, growing population is exciting, but at Ventures Platform, we believe this is just the entry point, and that the true opportunity lies in bridging the gap between consumers and non-consumers. Listen to our founding partner, Kola A., speak on the core of our investment thesis on the 1st episode of #StartupCap, a weekly CNBC Africa show that brings together the biggest startup voices to delve into the ins and outs of startup capital movements in Africa. Here are some other key takeaways from the conversation with David van Dijk and Tania Habimana: ✨ Local investors are increasingly playing a vital role in funding African startups, and there's room for more. ✨ There are successful ways to navigate Africa's fragmented markets (think regional blocs & minimal physical footprints). ✨ Access to capital shouldn't depend on background - strong ideas and passionate founders are key. ✨ Exits are crucial for a healthy ecosystem (success begets more success), and there are promising signs of more to come. Kola A. is so correct and many are starting to do just that ('bridge the gap'), such as this incredible businesswoman Christelle Kwizera and her brilliant team at Water Access Rwanda, have done just that - they have 'bridged the gap' as her company is primarily focused on the bottom of the pyramid’s need for affordable and safe water and deploys models of access that provide clean water in a convenient manner (and provide jobs for many). https://www.lionessesofafrica.com/blog/2020/10/25/christelle-kwizera-a-globally-award-winning-social-entrepreneur-changing-african-lives?rq=christelle

Well said. That's a big step in evaluating the universe, and often missed / skipped : "What percentage of the population are financially capable of being your consumer".

Very informative! As the President of Commonwealth Business Women Africa (CBW-Africa) I am in support of the work Ventures Platform Fund is doing for startups. African startups are crucial for the economy, driving innovation, creating jobs, and attracting investment. They address local challenges, foster entrepreneurship, and contribute significantly to economic growth and development across the continent.

Very well said Kola A. Indeed the real opportunity lies in our ability to convert the growing African population into consumers who have sufficient disposable income to be able to pay for services or goods.
