The great resignation is over, and start-ups are struggling. Sure, what does it mean? We are seeing a significant shift in the market across tech and generally in other high-skill corporate roles. While internal churn from employees seeking a 20% rise may have reduced, the availability of skilled talent hasn’t materially improved as the AFR would have us believe. When organisations top and tail their workforces in response to tightening market conditions, the top moves on quickly and the remaining folks who have lost their job don’t seem to have the requisite skills to fill the gaps employers desperately need. We think employers will need to invest in learning and development and build on the available talent in the market to get the job done. We agree with Richard White (CEO WiseTech) that if you’re a start-up that has never made any money, the days of throwing money at developers are over. Start-ups and companies trying to scale that are not making money are facing seriously tough conditions across capital and debt markets.

"Hidden talent" stays hidden with Automated Employment Tools The use of automated employment tools, such as Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS), is growing. As reported by Harvard business school, 99% of Fortune 500 companies use ATS when looking for new hires. The progression of this technological transition has sown seeds of concern among job seekers, with many saying that employment decisions cannot be solely predicated on technological mechanisms. According to the "Hidden workers: untapped talent" study by Harvard Business School, millions of skilled individuals in Europe and the US are classified as "hidden workers". Despite possessing commendable talents, these individuals languish in the shadows due to factors like resume gaps. The study suggests that harnessing the "hidden workers" pool could benefit businesses. It would lead to a more diverse workforce, allowing companies to discover exceptional candidates that automated systems might otherwise filter out. One of the solutions suggested by the Harvard study is shifting from negative to affirmative filters in these automated systems. Currently, these systems often exclude candidates due to variables like lacking a specific degree or having gaps in employment history.
