Grand Union, Betsy Ross, French Alliance, Indian Peace, Great Star, Concentric Circle and 50-star – these are some of the key moments in the evolution of the American Flag. What is now thirteen horizontal strips of red and white, along with 50 stars in a blue rectangle was not always this way. Since 1777, the design of the flag has been altered 26 times. A curious case of stars. While the first flag resembling the modern stars and stripes had a Union Jack in the upper left corner; on July 14, 1777, a constellation of thirteen stars in white and blue was designed. Theories of origin run wild, from the Valais 1618 coat of arms to that of George Washington’s family. 13 stars but which constellation? The Flag Resolution did not specify the particular arrangement of the stars. Among the variety of designs, was the Betsy Ross flag with 13 stars in a circle. Francis Hopkinson, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence also designed a flag with the six-pointed stars in five rows. His claim on its design contradicts the Ross story that George Washington gave a sketch to Betsy to sew the flag. With the increase in the number of states, the stars kept increasing. In 1888, a plan was passed by the Congress in which the flag was to have 20 stars – each signifying a new state. This was followed by a 48-star flag adopted in 1912 as well as the first specification of the official arrangement of the stars – six rows of eight stars each. Finally, in 1960, the current 50-star flag was adopted with Hawaii and Alaska gaining statehood.
