Thank you, Julie Castro Abrams and Lupe Augier for inviting me to attend the How Women Lead, #GetOnBoard LGBTQ+ Affinity group session yesterday. My takeaway was to SHOW UP and be VISIBLE. Being a woman in financial services, I get invited to several women's events throughout the year. If I miss an event and I want to see if it is something I will attend next year, I will ask those who went questions about their experience. Most of them are very positive but when I ask if there were any speakers who were LGBTQ, trans, or non-binary, or if there were any sessions for folks who identify as LGBT, trans, or non-binary, the answer is usually "No" or "I don't think so." So I appreciate the fact that How Women Lead held a space for several affinity groups at this week's board event. If I recall, I asked Sheryl Hickerson, FLMI of Females and Finance Community that same question about a conference she attended last year, she said "No, but I am going to do something about it." And here we are a year later with UNITY™ Programship at Females and Finance and soon other communities within Females and Finance Community. Getting back to my takeaways from yesterday, being VISIBLE means letting people know you are in the room and are stepping up. People are looking for LGBT, trans and non-binary professionals. If you are part of the community or want to work with the community SHOW UP and BE VISIBLE! Also, 🏳️🌈 Put a DEI statement on your website. 🏳️🌈 Mention that you are part of the community. 🏳️🌈 Let others know open to working with the community. 🏳️🌈 And show up for events like #GetOnBoard!

Happy Pride, San Antonio! 🏳️🌈 Let's celebrate the progress we've made, but remember, the fight for equality continues! Our LGBTQ+ community fuels the rich history and vibrant culture of our city. Pride didn't start with a Party and Parades – it started with a fight for justice (Stonewall, 1969). As a LGBTQ+ Equity Advocate, I'm dedicated to addressing the real issues impacting our community. Here's the tea 🍵 on some key challenges: - Housing struggles: Discrimination and high rent lead to LGBTQ+ homelessness. We need fair housing policies and affordable options. - Limited healthcare access: Let's ensure culturally competent healthcare providers for all. - Economic hurdles: LGBTQ+ individuals, especially people of color and Transgender members, face financial challenges. We must advocate for equal job opportunities and financial security. - Mental health matters: Discrimination affects mental health. We need LGBTQ+-affirmative mental health resources for a thriving community. Let's break down barriers and build a city where everyone shines, regardless of who they love or how they identify. Accesing support when we need it can make all the difference.

Today is LGBTIQ Domestic Violence Awareness Day... A day when we need to acknowledge that more than 60% of the LGBTQASB+ community report experiencing domestic, family or intimate partner violence. Despite these statistics, the community is less likely to report it to the police, or seek support from services when in crisis. If we do seek support, it's unlikely we'll find support services that meet our needs. The majority of generalist family violence and domestic violence services are poorly equipped to deal with the specifics of LGBTQASB+ family and domestic violence. This is especially the case when dealing with members of community from intersectional backgrounds. Many of these mainstream organizations instead perpetuate a domestic and family violence narrative that is heteronormative, eurocentric, cis-normative, and exclusionary to the queer community. Beneath this exclusion, the system is fraught with the marginalization and ignorance that can cause ongoing lack of access to marginalized groups ... And when we don't feel welcome or included, we won't seek support or report the crimes against us. So today, we should support those organizations that offer specific services to our community members in need. A new toolkit will help enhance intergenerational communication and connection among the LGBTQ+ community 🤝 Intergenerational disconnection is a growing societal problem, particularly among LGBTQ+ people, whose ‘families of choice’ are often peer-group-based without descendants and are less likely to include members from their ‘family of origin’. When people from different generations lack the opportunity to communicate and understand each other’s perspectives and experiences, this can lead to divisive stereotyping, misunderstanding and less connected communities. In this ESRC: Economic and Social Research Council impact project, led by Matthew Hall, Andrew King and Helen Kingstone at the University of Surrey, researchers are working with LGBTQ+ charitable organisations that specialise in supporting LGBTQ+ communities to establish how best to facilitate interventions that bring different generations together. Their brand new toolkit, presented to policymakers in Westminster in recent weeks, offers evidence-based recommendations for running intergenerational workshops with LGBTQ+ staff, members, volunteers and/or service users.
