Avian influenza of the type A(H5N1) has raised concern in the United States due to an increased detection in mammals. 🐑🦠 🐔 Avian influenza viruses typically spread through direct contact with infected birds or their droppings, saliva and respiratory secretions. Heightened surveillance and control measures are necessary to prevent the further spread of avian influenza and minimize the risk to both animal and human health. Great comments. In the future, it may be helpful to expand on more reasons that US migrant workers generally are not able, or do not want to interact with authorities. They are too afraid of retribution, being fired, or even being deported. If they have to support a family unit, it is vital to keep working. I worked with migrant workers and helped them get vaccinated. Most had alot of fear to even discuss options with me. Fortunately, I had lots of Mexican or Mixteco healthcare volunteers, translators, and navigators to help gain some trust, but even then many refused to fill out forms. If the forms are not filled, then no testing, care, vaccines, nor really anything else can be done. Then even with the small subset of immigrant or local management, they also will be reluctant to report anything. They need to set an example to the workers by also not showing that people can call in sick without dire consequences. Then there are the US health privacy laws....which is a further burden on potential reporting by any in the US healthcare system. A family member could go to an ER, or an urgent care, and we would never ever know. COVID is not reportable either. While most will not take a sick day or days, that is common to most people who live paycheck to paycheck. Since I once lived like that, I can relate. In addition, lots of Farm workers are not directly employed by the farmer, but go thru often predatory intermediary agencies. The contract agencies do not offer healthcare and can lie about the workers being legal or not. In fact, I had people admit/claim being undocumented. They were contract workers who refused to fill out forms and get free COVID shots. They leveled with me that they were too fearful...and they and their families & coworkers were all at a great risk of transmitting COVID in the community [at community centers or schools], or in the household. Many of us know that household transmission is all too common. It is suspicious that despite the current US farm workers getting ill that not one family member has admitted to transmitted illness. It is likely happening, but not being reported. Why would someone's wife or kid report this without any health insurance? How could they endanger the whole families survival? Why risk going back to the violent dangerous country that they somehow escaped from? They must weigh the risk and benefits as we all do. They are not here to please us...they are here for their survival.

The detection of highly pathogenic Avian Influenza in dairy breeds is indeed unusual and warrants immediate attention from professionals in both animal and human health sectors. It is needed to develop a comprehensive preparedness plan to effectively manage and mitigate any potential risks associated with this unexpected development. https://lnkd.in/gGkGFPK4
