Ely struggled to breathe as soon as she was born. At just six days old, she was admitted to the Alberta Children’s Hospital and diagnosed with basal meningeal encephalocele, an obstructive mass of tissue and fluid growing in her nasal cavity. Due to her size and fragile state, surgery would need to wait until Ely was bigger and stronger. However, she would need intervention to help her breathe — at 29 days old, she received a tracheostomy. While Ely’s parents were relieved their sweet baby’s condition had stabilized, they were also overwhelmed. A child with trach requires 24/7 care by someone equipped to handle the medical emergencies that may arise. They needed to learn basic day-to-day trach care – how it works, how to keep it clean and unobstructed, and what Ely’s breathing and function were like at baseline. They also needed to learn more stressful things, like changing her trach, how to suction fluids out and what to do if it becomes blocked or dislodged, leaving Ely without oxygen. The KidSIM Pediatric Simulation program at the Alberta Children’s Hospital was an invaluable resource for them. Funded with community support, KidSIM is a simulation program for medical experts, families, and schools to practice real-time, emergency scenarios on high-tech, life-like mannequins. Care providers can keep their skills as sharp as possible, and families like Ely's learn how to care for their child. Learn more about KidSIM and how it helped families last year in our 2023 Report to the Community. https://ow.ly/aQTM50QfIU3

🚨🦷 😰 Beware Parents! Teething Troubles Can Turn Treacherous! 🦷👶 Teething, a rite of passage for all infants and children, can be a distressing ordeal. As parents and caregivers, our instinct is to alleviate our child’s discomfort. However, the path to relief may be fraught with danger. Many are tempted to soothe their child’s gums with prescription or over-the-counter medicines containing benzocaine or lidocaine, or even homeopathic tablets. These may seem like viable solutions, but beware! The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued stern warnings about these products. They pose a serious risk to children, potentially leading to grave injuries, and in extreme cases, even death. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) advocates for safer alternatives to treat teething pain. Simple remedies such as rubbing your infant’s gums with a clean finger, or providing a firm rubber teething ring to chew on, can be effective. 👉📝👈 Remember, when it comes to your child’s health, it’s always better to be safe than sorry!

Experienced Maternal Fetal Medicine Nurse | Assisting attorneys nationwide by reviewing birth injury-related cases from a savvy healthcare perspective |
What do we do if the baby isn't getting enough oxygen during labor? 🚑 Have you ever heard of in utero (intrauterine) resuscitation? 🚑 There are certain interventions a nurse may perform or a doctor may order in order to get more oxygen to the baby. These techniques are usually tried first before rushing to a c/section. Here are a few Intrauterine resuscitation techniques with the potential benefit: 🤰 Positioning the mom on their side ☑ avoids compression of the mom's blood vessels near their heart and improves the uterus and placenta's ability to get blood flow ☑ alleviates umbilical cord compression 💉Reducing or turning off the pitocin ☑ pitocin is a medication that causes uterine contractions. Too many contractions can cause the baby to not get enough oxygen. 💦 IV fluid bolus ☑ improves the maternal blood volume and allows more blood to flow to the uterus and placenta. more blood flow = more oxygen 💓 Give the mom oxygen (mixed evidence on this one- some folks still do it) ☑ increases oxygen transfer to the fetal umbilical vein 💧💧💧 Amnioinfusion (adding IV fluids into the uterus through an intrauterine catheter) ☑ alleviates umbilical cord compression and recurrent decelerations in the baby's heart rate caused by cord compression (variables). There are different types of fetal heart rate patterns / decelerations. A careful assessment of factors that are contributing to fetal hypo-oxygenation should guide the choice of which technique to use. ⚖ If you need help reviewing the medical records of a baby affected by hypo-oxygenation, I'm here to help! ⚖ Do you have any questions about intrauterine resuscitation or signs of hypo-oxygenation? 📷 this picture is actually one my husband took of my first baby's heart rate during labor. She received a lot of intrauterine resuscitation. #birthinjury #medicalmalpractice #legalnurseconsultant #SavvyLegalRN
