The COVID-19 pandemic exposed how the shortage of nurses and other healthcare professionals is having a profound impact on our health-care system. We simply haven’t prepared to build a sustainable workforce. The past few years been a period of intense uncertainty that will continue to contribute to major shifts in health care and how it is delivered. In any period of disruption or rapid change, there is a pressing need for leadership. The Master of Health Leadership and Policy in Clinical Education helps bridge the gap between theory and practice and helps students build the skills they’ll need to thrive as clinical leaders and educators. Woven throughout this is an emphasis on acquiring interpersonal communication and leadership skills through business classes and many projects involving groupwork and collaboration. The breadth of opportunities available to our graduates is wide. We’ve seen that the MHLP in Clinical Education is a springboard for multiple career pathways, such as clinical educators, clinical leaders, senior leaders in quality and safety initiatives, project management, and post-secondary educators. Why do we do this? As dedicated healthcare leaders and colleagues, we share a common mission: to improve our healthcare systems for the benefit of our workforce and, ultimately, our patients. Our purpose is to uplift and foster each other's growth. There is no valid reason for the prevalence of one-upmanship and posturing evident in the comments sections. What did I learn while leading a Practice Fellowship pilot this year?   This week we celebrated the final chapter of a year of dedicated learning with Victorian Health Promotion Foundation (VicHealth)’s first batch of Health Promotion and Prevention Practice Fellows. Congratulations Lucy Stephens Camilo Cayazaya (MSci Diet) Alana Kelly Abrar M. Taff Ruvaro Melissa Deutscher and Ayesha Maharaj and thank you for your dedication, insights, courage and laughter. So, what did I learn? • How experiences and practice can more powerfully change the way we think compared to the other way around. In a program that’s all about practice Richards Rohr’s words that “We do not think ourselves into new ways of living, we live ourselves into new ways of thinking” became a guiding principle. • As individuals, teams and organisations we need to actively build a culture of learning. Critical practices like reflection, seeking diverse perspectives, deep listening, examining mental models, critical self-assessment and iterative adaptation are needed to underpin positive change and happen when we make learning an individual and collective priority. • Great relationships happen when we plan for care and create safety together, and this enables an environment where people feel ok to try new things, to share their ideas and talk about the things that went well and not so well. Special thanks to the fabulous KA McKercher for teaching us about a model of care for co-design. • Competency frameworks can provide structure and direction for purposeful learning if they are accompanied by iterative planning, reflection and adaptation. Collective reflection can support sustainable integration of new knowledge and skills into practice over time. • Never underestimate the value of developing leadership capability at every level. Shout out to Rob Moodie for guiding this process of self-discovery and empowerment for us.   I've been privileged to shepherd and bear witness to some of what I’m sure will be an ongoing process of transformation this year. I look forward to taking my own learnings forward and nurturing their continued growth. I imagine with excitement the many ripples that will continue to flow from our time together and the many ways these seven health promotion stars 🌟 will continue to help make Victoria a healthier place for all.
