The North Atlantic hurricane season officially started last month, which will signify a degradation in satellite communication. 🛰 What impact will this have on maritime users and how might providers seek to combat this problem? Future planning will be essential as climate change continues to bite. 🌀 Read on, as we share our thoughts. 👉 https://lnkd.in/deJd3fwZ #maritime #maritimeconnectivity #climatechange

The forecast for 2024 predicts the most intense hurricane season in decades, highlighting the urgent need for climate action. Let's connect and prioritize resilience-building efforts, safeguard vulnerable communities, and address the root causes of climate change. The recent migration report, presented to the House of Commons in collaboration with OnePlanet and Rewired Earth, underscores this urgency. Together, we must drive change and urge political leaders to take necessary action for a livable future. #ClimateAction #Resilience #Collaboration

Cherri-Ann Farquharson, Capacity Development and Gender Expert at The CCREEE, recently appeared on 'The Conversation' with Kwame Thomas to discuss the urgent need for improved climate resilience in the aftermath of the widespread devastation caused by Hurricane Beryl. Ms Farquharson discussed the factors that contributed to Beryl's rapid intensification, how this compares to historical hurricane patterns and the long-term implications of more frequent and powerful storms because of climate change. A few days ago, in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans have highlighted the unprecedented occurrence of simultaneous Category 5 hurricanes, with Major Hurricane #Jova in the Pacific and Major Hurricane #Lee in the Atlantic both reaching this rare intensity. In 2017, we witnessed a similar phenomenon when Hurricanes Irma and Maria temporarily became Category 5 storms over the Atlantic. This extraordinary development can be attributed to the unique oceanic conditions in the Pacific and Atlantic, underscoring the impact of #climatechange on our weather patterns. Since 2015, there has been an annual occurrence of at least one hurricane reaching Category 5 intensity, which raises concerns about the influence of climate change on these extreme weather events. Addressing these challenges requires collective action and a commitment to climate resilience. #GOESTwest #NOAA #Hurricanejova #Hurricanelee

The aftermath of Hurricane Beryl on Carriacou. The devastation is terrible, but the resilience of the Caribbean people is terrific. However, as more of these events occur, these people may be unable to continue living here; they can't keep rebuilding every time. Where will they go? We're seeing countries falling for right-wing, anti-migration rhetoric—the very same countries that are most at fault for human-caused climate change. So who is going to help us? https://lnkd.in/e2WWAJJV

Hurricane Beryl is reminding us all in very stark terms of the impact climate change is having on extreme weather patterns. 🥇 Beryl is breaking records - first June hurricane ever to hit Category 5 (yesterday she was the first to hit Cat 4) 🥇 Beryl is the farthest east a storm has ever hit Category 4, 🥇 Beryl is first storm before September to go from tropical depression to major hurricane in under 48 hours. Why is this happening? 🌡 Warm water is fueling Beryl, with ocean heat content in the deep Atlantic the highest on record for this time of year. 🌊 Beryl's ferocity will life-threatening wind speeds and storm surges. 🐠 The Caribbean island's natural defense system - coral reefs - are being destroyed by, among other destructive human behaviors, the same warming waters that are creating more intense hurricanes. Follow Center for Disaster Philanthropy to remain informed and to learn how you can help those in the storm's path. #HurricaneBeryl #Preparedness #Recovery #ClimateChange

This is data from NOAA on hurricanes that have impacted the United States. There's no information that suggests that hurricanes are increasing in number or strength for that matter. Aren't we supposed to be in a climate crisis? Don't we have to reduce our carbon emissions to reduce hurricane impacts? Or can we finally admit that people love our beautiful oceans and want all the amenities that go with living near the ocean, such as infrastructure and homes, which keep increasing in their prices? https://lnkd.in/g8Z5cy7V

No worries for the schoolkids in Texas who may be impacted by Hurricane Beryl. If their books are destroyed, perhaps Florida can ship them some "DeSantis Specials", the textbooks in which the words "climate change" will ne'er be found. Isn't that special? https://lnkd.in/eXr4ER-f "• Beryl worsened by climate change: The abnormally warm ocean waters that facilitated Beryl’s intensification show that this hurricane season will be far from normal. Beryl’s blow to Jamaica was worsened by climate change, a new rapid attribution analysis from ClimaMeter found. Modern storms like Beryl tracking close to Jamaica are capable of unloading 30% more rain and 10% stronger winds compared to the similar storms from 1979 to 2001 because of human-caused climate change, the study found."

Hurricane season is here, bringing lessons from past impacts and better strategies for supporting coastal communities in the US. One of these strategies, the COASTAL Act, establishes goals for a framework for assessing hurricane damage. In our latest lesson, you’ll learn about this framework and the data and tools under development by NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration to support its partners during and after a tropical cyclone event. This lesson is geared toward anyone involved in hurricane damage assessment and those residing in these communities who want to learn more about this process. #hurricaneseason #coastalact #coastalcommunities ➡ COASTAL Act Overview and Requirements lesson: https://lnkd.in/gS8UriHx ➡ 1,000+ free weather, water, and climate resources: https://lnkd.in/g7f4VZV3

Our changing climate is causing more intense and frequent disasters every year. In fact, Idalia is the third hurricane to make landfall in Florida in the last year and the strongest hurricane to hit the state's Big Bend region in more than 125 years. Scientists warn that hurricanes are becoming more destructive with increased rainfall and higher storm surges, and now is the time to take action in response to the climate crisis.
