Business model innovation around Retrieval Augmented Generation from O'Reilly -- they have indexed all the content on Safari and are using it to provide answers grounded in vetted and credible content (their unique sauce). Another innovation here is to credit/compensate authors for the fraction of their work used in a generated answer. While this is progress, the more well-grounded the summaries look, the more dangerous the inevitable mistakes will be -- irrelevant documents will still lead to misleading summaries, and there will still be hallucinations because of interpolations with the text used to train Llama. At least based on the article, I don't see them employing self-checks or guardrails. I hope those are coming. https://lnkd.in/gqqHiR2D

As a leader, it's very helpful to be able to recognize the pattern of disagreement that underlies the man vs bear meme. The question is "What would you rather meet when hiking all alone in a forest: a bear or a strange man?". There are two different interpretations of the question. Many women hear one. Many men hear the other. Q1: which of these potential threats are you less fearful of? Women: a bear won't sexually assault me. So, bear. Q2: which of these would be less likely to harm you? Men: a smaller fraction of men are dangerous. So, man. The first interpretation focuses on Impact. The second on frequency. These are both valid ways of looking at the world. It's why nuclear power is so controversial, for example. This pattern of one side focusing on impact and the other on frequency happens in a lot of situations, and understanding that this is what is happening is a way to break out of logjammed negotiations.

FTC has just issued a rule saying that non-competes are invalid. This is very welcome news and will make job markets and the US economy much more dynamic. Because it's a federal law, it applies to all states. Non-competes were not enforceable in California, but Washington companies routinely enforced them even in marginal cases and for junior positions.
