Being a summer camp counselor set me up for LIFE, but HOW exactly? Be Flexible Things rarely go exactly how you plan when dealing with 100+ kids and dozens of daily activities. Being able to entertain through different methods on the fly with limited supplies is an art. Energy Matters It’s only a bad day if you let it be, and kids pick up on your energy like a bloodhound. If you aren’t excited about what is next, why should they be? Making a glass-half-full perspective your default spills over into every other aspect of your life. Faith (in myself) Without realizing it, you’re leading groups of people and making automatic decisions based on information and instinct. In this process, you build trust with both others and yourself. I could go on for ages, but you get the idea—those summer experiences manifested into skills I now carry in my personal and professional life. P.S., if you’re a former camp counselor, you know how easy it is to spot another in the wild! The other night at practice, one of the girls on my daughters soccer team asked me what my job was 😅 Her: “What do you do?” Me: “Why do you ask?” Her: “When I first met you, I thought you were a camp counselor. You are always talking about being a good teammate, working hard as a team, cheering each other on…and you have fun with us” Me: 😂 Me: "Well, actually when I was a teenager, I was a camp counselor. I do believe in building strong teams and being a good teammate. Those are the best kind of teams, where you support each other. I’m glad that you recognize it." Her: "So what do you do, anyway?" Me: "I work for a recruitment company. I help companies build great teams." Her, completely serious: "That makes sense." (...runs off to do the next drill) Your passion is your passion. Whether it’s at work, at home, or coaching your kids teams, I guarantee if you lean into it, others will notice.

Happy Friday! 😎 "Camp Counselor" may not sound impressive on a resume. But I'd disagree. There are many entry-level and lower-level positions where people gain massive amounts of technical skills, work ethic, and soft skills. As a camp counselor for 6th graders we... 🏕 Worked 12 - 14 hour days. 🏕 Watched up to 10 kids/day and an assistant. 🏕 Had 1:1's with each kid every week. 🏕 Took kids on field trips to Six Flags, King's Dominion, the aquarium, and more. 🏕 Started our work days at 5:30 am. 🏕 Taught kids survival skills, paintball, and tomahawk throwing. 🏕 Spoke with kids' parents about their children's social challenges and created plans to integrate them better into the groups. 🏕 Maintained a tight schedule transitioning our groups between activities every 30 - 45 minutes. Have you ever told a 6th grader it's time to stop playing paintball? Would not recommend it. 😆 When I see "camp counselor" on a resume I don't just look and say "Oh that's nice." It's a badge of honor and I want to hear from them about what they learned from their experience. If you have camp counselor experience I'd encourage you to share the challenges you faced and how they prepared you for your career. If you are a recruiter and you have a candidate with camp experience, I'd encourage you to take it seriously. Below is a photo of myself and my fellow counselors after one of our long days. Where did that energy go? 😅 #campcounselor #recruitment #recruiterlife #hiringpractices #resumeadvice #interviewadvice #happyfridayeveryone

We ask a lot of children when it comes to stepping into the unknown and trusting it will be fine, how does this shape the adults we are today? 🤔 We are (almost) at the Summer holiday midpoint and twice this week, with different children, I have asked them to feel the fear and do it anyway...what I am talking about here is holiday clubs! So it got me reflecting on my experiences of clubs when I was younger and what they taught me (and what they didn't!) 🦉 Brownies, commitment and discipline, but I still can't sew on a badge... 🔥 Woodcraft Folk, to respect nature, and that I don't like camping... 🎶 Exeter Children's Orchestra, tenacity, and the clarinet wasn't my calling... 🛶 Haven Banks, how to get out of trouble without panicking, and have fun... 🎭Grease, passion for theatre and dance, and the importance of teamwork I am sure I felt anxious at the time, wondered if I would make friends, would be able to do it or enjoy the activity. Some I loved every minute, others less so but that's life. So for every parent who has waved a child into a holiday club wondering if you are doing the right thing, they probably will learn some really great life skills, possibly find a passion and may even make friends for life. How have your interests as a child shaped who you are today? #feelthefearanddoitanyway #newexperiences #learning

Attorney | Commerial Litigation & Corporate Law Specialist | Business Rescue, Insolvency Law, and Turnaround Strategist | Vodcast host - So Many Hats
Thought Provoking Thursdays As I look back on my journey as an attorney, I've come to realize there are many things I wish I had known before diving into this career. The insights gained through experience are invaluable. Looking back, is there a particular aspect about your career that you wish you were aware of before venturing into this industry? For me, I wish I had a more practical understanding of the legal industry before diving in. Textbooks provide a foundation, but they don't teach you how the law operates in real-life situations. Even after doing vacation work, spending just a week or two at a firm wasn’t enough to fully grasp the day-to-day workings of the legal profession—the client interactions, the administrative tasks, and the pace of work were all aspects I had to learn on the job. I also wish I had known how capable I truly was when I first started out. As a new attorney, it's easy to feel overwhelmed by the complexity and responsibility of the work. However, with time, I realized that my education and experiences had prepared me well, and I was more competent and resilient than I initially believed. Recognizing and trusting in my own abilities earlier on would have given me more confidence and eased some of the initial anxieties. Whether it’s about the work-life balance, industry expectations, essential skills, or any unforeseen challenges, I’d love to hear your experiences and lessons learned. Drop your thoughts and reflections in the comments below.
