Today, Laura Sibbald, the newly appointed Executive Director of Neurodiversity Employment Network (NEN), visited VFES to discuss potential collaborative opportunities. NEN is an invaluable partner dedicated to connecting and promoting organizations and individuals around neurodivergent employment. Laura met with Sheba Simms, Director of Marketing and Communications, and Amy Zylberman, Assistant Director of Development and Major Gifts, and also connected with the leads of VFES’ Customized Workforce Solutions (Christine Coughenour, Director of Adult and Recreation Services) and Vanguard’s Community-Based Vocational Training programs (Donna Mazzella, Vocational and Transition Coordinator). We look forward to future collaboration that will benefit our students and adult participants and amplify our mission further in Greater Philadelphia.

In Prince George's County, we are reimagining the re-entry process for our returning citizens! With informed perspectives and new systems, we are taking a holistic approach to re-entry, aimed at reducing recidivism in our County. County Executive Angela Alsobrooks launched our Returning Citizens Affairs Division (RCAD) in 2022, led by Michael Williams, MPA, after recommendations made by our Returning Citizens Advisory Board, which was launched in 2019. Because we understand that securing a job is not the only thing one needs to do to successfully transition back into society, RCAD also offers mentorship, transitional housing, document preparation, and more.✅ The impact that these initiatives & programs have had on participants so far is promising and recidivism amongst participants is down significantly. For us, Second Chance Month is beyond just a holiday. Learn more about our re-entry initiatives & programs at: mypgc.us/RCAD Employers can find more information on our Re-Entry Employment Incentive Program at: https://lnkd.in/ermb7wrF

☀ It was such a joy to spend time with the Little Sprouts, LLC community in order to discuss what care practices look like at work. Together, we explored care broadly and we also dove into the intersection of care and marginality. What does it look like to care for those who experience systemic oppression outside of work and systemic exclusion inside of work? 💡 Collective Care begs the questions: what new praxes of care emerge when we consider well-being at work to be a group endeavor? And, how do we move away from models of self-care that may offer us a limited understanding of wellness at work? 🌻 Bringing our humanity into the workplace allows us to create practices, policies, and structures that foster wellness and inclusion.
By drawing upon her unique background in American Studies, Psychology, and Theology in order to help organizations deepen their commitment to equity and inclusion, Ciarra Jones makes an exciting addition to our list of presenters for this year’s CHILD Conference. Her consulting partners include (but are not limited to) OpenSesame, University of California San Francisco, Nonprofit Finance Fund, Hinge Health, Pride in the Pews, and Covenant House California. Her writing has been featured in Huffington Post, BBC, Elite Daily and Zora Mag. Ciarra’s workshop theorizes that a culture of collective care – one that fosters allyship, connection, and collegiality - is essential for creating an inclusive and thriving workplace environment. In this session, participants will: • Understand the importance of collective care and its impact on individual and team well-being. • Possess tools and strategies to promote allyship and solidarity, creating a more equitable and supportive workplace. • Develop enhanced conflict management skills, leading to more effective problem-solving and collaboration. • Feel empowered to contribute to a workplace culture that values diversity, inclusion, and positive interpersonal dynamics. Early education professionals outside of our network, along with families with young children, can use this form to sign-up for copies of Sustainable Education materials from this year’s conference: https://hubs.li/Q01_4nGC0

This week, we had an incredible session with Jackie Broussard, Biama Charles, M.A., CHTMP, and Harry Emmanuel Alvarez on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the travel and experiential education industry. 👇 Thank you so much to our esteemed panelists! Your expertise, wisdom, and practical knowledge adds so much to our community and we gained so many strategies from this quick session! Some of the questions they addressed included: 💵 With a high cost of tuition, how do we increase accessibility among our enrolled students? 📝 Given the fact that our programs are packed with activities and students have a busy schedule, what strategies can be implemented to ensure students feel safe and have the opportunity (time) to report incidents? 💷 How can we start the conversation around ensuring equitable pay in our organization? 🥳 How to best train staff to include students of differing backgrounds and experiences to build a meaningful community that feels inclusive? Members: Check out the recording in your Cornerstone Resource Library! 🤩
