What makes projects sustainable? In the health world, equity and effective health systems play a crucial role. We can have all the medicine and health workers we need, if they’re not distributed equitably, and if medicine doesn’t reach the people who need it, then these tools end up being pretty useless. A week from today (next Tuesday, 19 September), this year’s United Nations General Assembly’s high level debates will start where heads of states and ministers will look at solutions for, among other things, global development, of which health forms a big part. There will, for instance, be debates on universal access to healthcare, TB and climate health. Join Janet Muriuki of IntraHealth International, Anu Kumar (president and CEO at Ipas) and I on Wednesday, 13 September at 2:30pm when we share our ideas around making health systems sustainable. I am so energized by the first-ever Health Equity Forum at the United Nations General Assembly this week! There is clearly no shortage of people committed to helping marginalized communities access the medical services they need and deserve. Many from the public and private sector gathered in New York to exchange ideas, share real-world lessons and foster robust collaborations.   Along with Kenneth Lanier (DeWayne), I had the honor of representing GSK at this incredible meeting of the minds. Session after session, we soaked up the discussions, interacted with scores of attendees and pondered over future opportunities for our #HealthEquity efforts.   There is no one size fits all when it comes to tackling social determinants of health. For one family it might be paying for the doctor’s visit. For another, it could be a problem taking time off work or catching the bus. For yet another perhaps it’s lack of wi-fi to log into the hospital portal. Not only do the challenges vary but they can morph. This means we cannot rest; we need to lock arms to forge ahead. These challenges didn’t surface over the course of a few years and if we’re determined to make changes, we need a comprehensive plan that spans companies, industries, levels of government and non-profits.   In my world of #ClinicalTrialDiversity, we have a team monitoring #Diversity, #InclusiveResearch, and #SocialDeterminantsOfHealth every day. They’re solving problems one at a time. Brandon Maggio and his impressive team are unlocking avenues for decentralized clinical trials. Nisha Patel is working with community organizations to elevate awareness. Andrea Bonhomme is delivering cultural competency training for health care professionals. Ashwin Mathew, and Clare Gibson are developing and maturing the analytical tools our clinical teams need to see who should be represented in our studies, and where in the world we should locate our investigation sites.   At GSK, we’re looking through the health equity lens at all levels of our business. From partnerships to data analytics to community events, we envision a healthier, more equitable world for all. I’m excited for the work ahead of us.
