Great to see the Boch Center in Boston as one of the examples in this article about post-pandemic arts innovations.
Performing arts groups are rebounding and thriving through arts innovations after the pandemic. 💫 A great example is a theater and arts group in Helena, Montana that received and used a creative place-making grant to create 24 pieces of public art and two iconic murals to invigorate the bleak streetscape of its neighborhood. International Public & Political Communication (MA) student seeking placement opportunities and experience. Interested in Political Science, Journalism, & Public Service
Local theatres, whether still used for performances or for alternative purposes, are crucial to the local community, helping to foster young & emerging talent, provide a home for theatre performers and audiences alike, and also simply for their historical significance in their areas. With one of Sheffield's venues, currently used by local organisation Creative Arts Development Space, named in Theatres Trust's 2024 Theatres at Risk register, it is more apparent than ever how many small local venues are continuously faced with the risk of closure. It is hugely important to support local venues at all levels, including with community groups, activists and most crucially, local authorities & politicians. I recently wrote about the affected venue, Sheffield's Abbeydale Picture House, in my capacity as Arts & Theatre Editor for Forge Press in hopes of raising awareness of this venue & its high-risk status, as well as contacting local councillors & the Member of Parliament for the area, in hopes of working towards a solution to ensure the protection of this building. Develop those skills
On the 5th of August, the Michaelhouse Jazz Band showcased their talent at the "All Stars Shine: A Showcase of KZN Schools Talent" concert held at The Playhouse Theatre. Among several skilled school and community ensembles, I am proud to say the Michaelhouse boys delivered an impressive performance, receiving enthusiastic applause. Gqamile Mbuyazi and Luneziwe Mshengu's vocal prowess stirred the crowd, evoking cheers and applause midway through their songs. The concert ended in a finale featuring all the participating ensembles performing a mass item. Michaelhouse extends its gratitude to Natalie Rungan and The Playhouse Theatre for their gracious hosting and the opportunity to perform in such an iconic South African venue.

All areas of the creative industry provide means for economic growth, regeneration, they are the future of our city centres landscape, culture, tourism, business growth, communication and should be supported. Theatre / Dance / Music / Festivals / Live Events - Dates beyond the Shakesphere era provides fantastic insight into our history, culture and drives creativity, growth and spend within city centres. Vera Lynn’s music empowered soliders during WW2. Radio, Press and TV - Plays an integral role in our democracy reporting on major news stories holding those in power to account, weather which influences consumer spend and support’s communities on travel issues, ads on air which boost businesses and provide strong ROI. Social & Online - Keeps people connected and drives conversation, communication and enables SME’s to have a voice with small budgets. Provides vital services, access to food, meds, clothing via online e-commerce sites now. Out of Home / Sponsorships - provides jobs in technology, supports and enhances city centres, provides local authorities with incremental investment and income through land acquisition and partnerships to use for other public services. Art - supports with creativity in individuals, mental health, well-being, reigniting and embracing public spaces bringing together minority communities. Art helps those most vulnerable impacted by war and conflict get through the darkest of days. The creative industries are an essential part of our communities and should be recognised as such, the creative industries were almost destroyed by the impact of government policy and regulation during Covid-19. It’s no longer a matter of “nice to have” it’s a must, it’s an essential service and we must continue to embrace and support the ever changing landscape that is our incredible creative industries community. 👇🫶

The desires and needs of theatre makers and audiences are not mutually exclusive- nor are the crises each are facing. There is so much potential to engage in research, redefinition and elevation of community right now. From new economic models (LEAD, Doughnut Economics etc.) to rigorous ecological care, theatre as an art is not dying but demanding new structure to thrive. Non-profit theatre is perhaps the bellwether to the larger wear on non-profit scaffolding that demands robust structural reconsideration on governmental civil and economic levels. May we lead transformation amidst crises. For the lives of so many stakeholders of these organizations: may we all demand right relationship and respectful, humane care amidst transformation.
“That doesn’t mean live theater is ending, but it does mean that many of the institutions that have become the face of theater in America will close if they don’t reform immediately. It’s a horrible situation for the people who have made these theaters their life’s work. But it is also an opportunity for a new generation of arts leaders to pioneer a model that makes more sense for the realities of this century — one that isn’t so reliant on the whims of the rich.”
