Winemakers or rentiers? In reality, there shouldn't be an expansion of vineyard areas. Instead, the removal of the prohibition on planting Nebbiolo vineyards for Barolo and Barbaresco production on the cooler northern slopes is crucial. In the past, the vine struggled to ripen in these areas due to climate changes. However, today, with rising temperatures, Nebbiolo is yielding promising results. Conversely, the southern slopes, like many other regions in Italy, are facing challenges and could potentially be substituted (rather than added to) by the more favorable. Have you ever heard of Temporary wines? Andrea Moser, enologist behind this project, is introducing a different way to make wine, detaching from the traditional concept of terroir we got used to refer to. Grapes coming from different geographies will be vinified in different places shortlisted for their peculiarities and with different tecniques, adopting practices which enhance at the best both the character of that grape and the type of wine they wish to achieve. Limited editions made for few, to purchase on pre-booking (as it often happens for Bordeaux wines) and dispatched only during the coldest months to preserve their features. The first wine, FLOW, will be available in October 2023. A mix of traditional local white grapes from a 80 years old vineyard near Arezzo, Tuscany, abandoned several years ago because of the cold weather and today discovered ideal for viticulture. The human intervention has been minimal, letting the environment and the grapes dialog and create their own narrative. A mix of Trebbiano, Vermentino, Malvasia bianca, Canaiolo bianco and a 5% of other unidentified grapes. Only 726 bottle released after a maceration & fermentation in Clayver, followed by a passage in small Vin Santo barriques, and a long lees contact. This year, Russiz Superiore is once again awarded by Giovanni Bigot, who assigns 90 points to the "Sauvignon Relais" vineyard 🏅 "Even in difficult vintages, every wine region has areas with natural potential that the Bigot Index can highlight. The vineyards capable of distinguishing themselves testify to the ability of humans, of farmers, to adapt by finding agronomic solutions and producing great wines despite adversity." These are the words of Giovanni Bigot, founder and owner of Perleuve company and creator of the Bigot Index, which evaluates 9 indicators (production, leaf surface area, ratio between leaves and production, grape health, cluster type, water stress, vigor, biodiversity and microorganisms, and vine age) to classify the best vineyards based on quality potential. This year, 62 vineyards have reached the highest quality peaks, in a list emerged after analyzing 1,400 total plots, distributed across various Italian regions, Slovenia, Cyprus, and Macedonia. "The Bigot Index confirms itself as an excellent tool to identify vineyards with a distinctive natural vocation. It's interesting to note how some vineyards confirm themselves over the years, thus outlining the wine areas that we could define, in the French manner, as crus. The optimal combination of the 9 agronomic factors - explains Giovanni Bigot - is rare, so much so that only 5% of the vineyards examined last year managed to achieve a score equal to or higher than 90 points, also due to the difficult weather conditions that affected the entire Italian territory and the Mediterranean, testing the abilities of winemakers to maintain high-quality standards." Want to sell more wine in 2024? Talk about sustainability. Consumers are paying attention to eco-friendly wines. Searches for "natural wine" have increased for the last several years, and a 2022 IWSR survey showed that 50% of US wine-drinkers were positively affected by branding that related to sustainability and organic farming methods for wine. In 2023, France becomes the world's leading wine producer, surpassing Italy. However, the sector is calling for a 13% reduction in cultivated vineyard area to enhance quality.
