📊 Did you know? In fall 2022, approximately 2.9 million students over 25 were enrolled in undergraduate degree programs in the U.S. These adult learners made up 23% of the 12.8 million enrolled undergraduates. Many adult learners juggle work, family responsibilities, and education, often facing limited financial resources and time for classes. Despite these challenges, they are dedicated to advancing their education and careers. In our faculty meeting this week, we discussed techno-bureaucratic thinking, which refers to a mindset or approach that combines technical and bureaucratic aspects in decision-making and problem-solving. It can lead to a lack of flexibility, stifles innovation, encourages depersonalization, an over reliance on quantitative data, top-down decision-making, and in-efficiency in rapidly changing environments. We discussed what techno-bureaucratic thinking looks like in K-12 schools and higher education. We will continue these conversations in the spring to guide thinking about our processes, policies, and sense of community in the School of Education. https://lnkd.in/gpEKGXKG

Today was BTSN - Back to School Night "The Double-Edged Sword of Grading and Early Competitiveness" As the back-to-school season approaches, it's an opportune time to reflect on the educational systems we've built. From the earliest stages, we introduce our children to the world of grading, where their worth is often distilled into letters and numbers. While assessments are essential for tracking progress and setting benchmarks, one can't help but ponder: Are we nurturing growth or sowing seeds of competitiveness too early? Grading, in many ways, sets the tone for comparison. Instead of fostering a love for learning, we inadvertently shift the focus to outperforming peers. This competitive spirit, while beneficial in certain aspects of life, can also breed anxiety, self-doubt, and a fear of failure in young minds. It's essential to strike a balance. While it's crucial to prepare our children for the competitive world, it's equally vital to ensure they grow in environments that celebrate learning for its own sake, not just for a grade. As educators, parents, and stakeholders in the future of our youth, perhaps it's time we re-evaluate our systems and ask ourselves: Are we molding holistic learners or just competitive performers? #BackToSchool #EducationReform #ChildDevelopment #HolisticEducation #GradingSystem #LearningJourney #CompetitiveEducation #ChildWellbeing #RethinkEducation #NurturingMinds #FutureLearners #SchoolSystems #AcademicPressure
