How do you reverse engineer your next move in Oil & Gas? Well, start with where you see yourself in 2-3 years. Do you see yourself staying in a technical role? Moving into management? or maybe shifting into consulting? Once you have a sense of your ideal direction, then it's time to look up titles. Yes, titles do matter! This is because titles are what orient an HR pro or recruiter to which types of positions would be ideal based on your previous experience. Titles also play an important role in salary negotiation. Most times #recruitment processes are centred around applicants showcasing thier #experience. Like many, I simply accepted it as a norm and didn't give much thought to why it was the case. Even more strange was the fact that I seemed to prioritise it as one of my top considerations for any #role, more than #pay even. A while back, I had one of those 💡 moments, following a visit from my gas engineer. Whenever I called him out, as soon as I explained the issue, he'd instantly suggest a probable cause, what was needed to fix, followed by "I have 20 years experience". More often than I cared to count he was accurate. I always attributed it to him just being good, what I hadn't really given thought to, was #Why he was good. It was his #wealth of experience. It's often said, "you don't pay a plumber to hit a pipe, you pay him for knowing where to hit". There are a number of things that come with experience, which make it both important and useful. 💫 #Sensitivity - being attuned to the #relevant points in a situation or a body of information and/or knowing where to probe. 💫 #Speed - an #ability to get the desired results within an agreed time frame or shorter. 💫 #Confidence - a #security in your ability to deliver the desired results based on a history of past achievements. 💫 #Knowledge - #information on what needs to be done and how best to go about it. Whilst experience comes with a lot of benefits, they are only realised when there is a conscious decision to #learn from them, otherwise the #experiences will be wasted. By the way, experiences don't always have to be yours. Maybe a post for another day 😉.

How have you adapted to changes in your industry? ✏️ Embrace them and find ways to sustain (oh well, I'm the same with any other working peeps that I have commitments and bills). The best way is that in between the changes, we have to grow so you won't be overwhelmed by the changes and worse feel lost especially at an age that you need to update resume. I've experience at least few cycles of oil price down from the year I graduated (can't find #processengineer job), contract terminated in a country many miles from home (#project was canned!), worrying day in day out if the day I step into the office would be my last (due to #mergersandacquisitions, client/ partner suddenly decided to terminate the #serviceagreement, #skill no longer applicable, #pandemic and many more). Self reminder to keep growing and to learn consistently some other skills, other than the one you knew, the one you studied in and the one you have worked all this while!
