Leading the total force includes recognizing the importance of family readiness and stability. Indeed, discussing the barriers to economic empowerment and some resources and organizations seeking to address these barriers is an excellent way to spend an afternoon. I am glad that the Department of USAF Fellows Program leadership is committed to supporting the development of Fellows's understanding of the needs and concerns of all military families. I am grateful to Mrs Sharene Brown, Mrs Jennifer Salzman (United States Space Force), and Mrs Suzie Schwartz, for sharing their knowledge and wisdom with the almost 200 Fellows and their spouses, and for engaging in such a great small group Q&A session following the main stage panel. Today marks the 248th birthday of the U.S. Navy. The birth of this fleet initiated quite a debate in the Continental Congress. Samuel Chase, one of the Founding Fathers, firmly believed that maintaining a standing navy was “the maddest idea in the world.” The original Continental Navy was founded, dissolved, and has since evolved into today’s modern Navy, which stands at an impressive level of readiness. There are currently 335,187 active duty service members, 272,505 enlisted personnel, and 191,597 Navy civilians. The US Navy has protected the country throughout its many wars. There are 27 National Medal of Honor recipients from the Navy buried or memorialized at ABMC hallowed sites. “Non sibi sed patriae” – (“Not self, but country”) - Unofficial slogan of the U.S. Navy. As we prepare to enter into the official US Military Veteran’s Day, some helpful reminders: 1) This day is for people who serveD, past tense. Important distinction. We are grateful for those currently serving but we only get one day of recognition. Please let us have 11/11. 🫡 2) We are very much alive. Memorial Day is in May (Though our fallen are veterans too). ☺️ Important distinction. 3) We only get one day, sometimes two days, for mass veteran discounts. Please help us by not overcrowding places where we can enjoy saving a few pennies for one day only. 😘 important distinction. 4) An endorsement not related to my employer: please check out Mission 22 and the awesomeness they are doing for veterans and their spouses. 5) Go Navy!!! During World War II, the U.S. Navy faced substantial losses in its submarine fleet, with 52 submarines and over 3,500 submariners lost in the line of duty. These submarines, now on eternal patrol, carried out daring missions that were critical to the Allied war effort, disrupting enemy supply lines, gathering intelligence, and sinking significant tonnage of enemy shipping. Each loss represented a profound sacrifice and demonstrated the bravery and resilience of the submariners who operated in perilous conditions beneath the sea. The legacy of these submarines and their crews serves as a powerful reminder of the cost of war and the heroism displayed by those who served. Their contributions significantly impacted the course of the war, despite the high risks and ultimate sacrifices they faced. T oday, we honor their memory and valor, recognizing the silent service's vital role in achieving victory during World War II. As we reflect on their service, we commit to preserving their stories and ensuring that their sacrifices are never forgotten.
