Leadership Coach 📶 Helping you find your purpose, maximize your potential, live a more balanced life, and provide MORE value along the way 🌱
(Friday gratitude shoutout) People like Jeff Tatarchuk, who turn down +$100,000/year jobs, keep me motivated. Let me tell you about when he gave up the chance to be a healthcare executive. A little history: When I was doing my MSA, I shared a class or three with Jeff at Andrews University. We crossed paths a bit, and in my whole life we've probably had less than an hour of 1:1 conversation. That year I quit all jobs to focus on my studies. But Jeff took the opposite approach. His approach was "while I'm here studying, why don't I start some businesses?" Fast forward three years. I invited him to coffee to pitch him a job. We would have paid him +$100k/year, plus insane benefits, plus the chance of rapid growth in salary and maybe even a shot at becoming a healthcare executive! I was sure the role and path was his if he'd just said yes. Cha-ching, right?!? 💰 🤷♂️ I thought it was a great chance to step back and reap the rewards of being an entrepreneur, while dumping a lot of the risk. Jeff listened, and we chatted about it for a bit. But he knew in his soul, and articulated clearly to me, that the role wasn't meant for him. You see, there is nothing mediocre about healthcare! But that's not where he would have thrived. I only recognize now I was there to test him with a chance at personal mediocrity. I've watched him start at least five businesses since then, and have seen the highs and the lows he's publicly shared about his chosen life. His note this week was the reminder I needed to be bold, be audacious, and push myself and my clients beyond their comfort zone and on towards greatness. So whether as an employee or entrepreneur, I know it's easy to get into a negative mindset. 🧠 "What am I doing?" 🧠 "Am I even competent?" 🧠 "Should I move back down a notch where things are 'easy?'" But let me be bold with you: If you are worried about the Peter Principle, and if you wrestle with Imposter Syndrome, you're probably right where you need to be. In leadership and business: 🙅♂️ Failing is saying "I've made it" or "I'm good enough." ✊ Success is saying "I never 'make' it" and "I'm not good enough, yet; but I will be!" So stay uncomfortable! And keep growing your skills and networks! You never know who or what is going to come in clutch in your moment of need!
Reread this until you believe it. Happy Saturday everyone!

Ase' or Ashe' is an African word from the Yoruba language, which originated in the country of Nigeria. Asé means three particularly important things: A.) (And the most widely known meaning)- Asé is a word of affirmation, like the word ‘Amen’ at the end of a prayer. It means, “Right on!” “Yes!” “I’m with you!” “I can dig it.” So, when someone says something, you like, say Asé loud and proud, for it is not a meek and retiring word. It is bold and powerful and affirms aloud that which resonates in your heart as true. Asé? B.) Asé is a word that means life force or life energy, like the concept of Prana in Sanskrit or Qi in Asia. Each person comes into this life with a certain amount of life force, which can be increased or decreased throughout our lives, depending on our choices. For example, negative thoughts and actions can decrease your life force, and positive thoughts and actions can increase it. In the Yoruba culture, it is said that our Ancestors bring us the Asé. Those who have come before us have generated for us and left behind for us a certain gravitas that becomes our Asé in this lifetime. Similarly, our descendants, those who come after us, increase our Asé as they help increase our bloodline and therefore our influence on this Earth. C.) (And perhaps the most important meaning)- Asé means the power to create that which you speak. As we’ve already discussed, Asé means life force, so it makes sense then that you are adding life force to every word that comes out of your mouth. This is one of the many reasons it is crucial to be careful of what you are saying. It is imperative to choose your words wisely and intentionally. If you only realized how much Asé you must create that which you speak, you would become much more aware of the words you add your life force to.
