The FAFSA situation continues, article below. From what I see they're slowly getting to a workable situation, it's another race against time now. One of the traps of leadership mentality is belittling the "execution phase" of a project - Do you have the right resources (talented, trained, experienced staff) to do what you want? And, is what you're trying to do do-able? I see an over-focus on leadership and possibly an under-focus on execution in all the external discussion of the FAFSA form system, which makes me wonder if the do-ing is being underdone... And of course no real way to tell from outside the project. I wish everyone involved clear thinking and good decision making, a lot rides on this project. https://lnkd.in/ehzmBrTa?

A bittersweet moment this afternoon as I've just come out of my final Marjon Student Union Trustee Board meeting after 6.5 years with the organsiation and 4 as Vice Chair. This post is probably gonna be a bit rambling, but it will be authentic. I joined Marjon at the age of 25 after seeing the post advertised in a Facebook Group. I'd been convinced by my then CEO Sarah Dawes to look at a board roll as a young manager who was attending our board as a staff member. I wasn't sure if that was right for me; I was young, not been on one before and assumed boards were for older people with much more career experience than me and from different walks of life to my own background. A call with the GM, Michael Davies , and I was convinced. I arrived at the end of a Turn Around Board process and was instantly welcomed, Mick, the Officers and the Turn Around Board Chair, spent time with me and got to know me. Board culture folks, don't underestimate it. Formal inductions are important, but I always think the time for that informal relationship and knowing you matter means more. I can reflect on a lot and I think it is fair to say the SU I joined feels vastly different to the one it is now. My first thoughts were a hint of glorified youth club; I'll admit I was only a small bit right at that and largely wrong. What I learned was the SU may not have the slick and professional approach I expected because it is so small and operates on a shoestring, but it had and still has a wonderful community of student leaders. The SU gets student leadership and a safe space to fail. It ain't glossy, but to steal a phrase: "School plays sell out". In that time we have massively improved governance; changed relationships with the University from tolerance to actual partnership; become much more strategic; diversified student leadership and survived Covid. Crucially, all done while retaining that special small community feel while maintaining top 5 or top 10 in NSS on pennies compared to other SU's. I've been very lucky to work with fantastic officer trustees; get to know part time officers; a small but really driven staff team; wonderfully challenging student trustees who have reframed my approach to being a board member; external trustees who have been a source of great support and got to know key university leaders. I've learned a lot about doing this in a small organisation having to be a hands-on trustee. I'm going to miss this place a lot, I'm going to miss the people. I've learned a lot, I think I've grown as a person and a professional. Taking that risk and challenging myself 6.5 years ago was without a doubt the best career decision I made. I probably wouldn't have my current job if I hadn't gone to Marjon SU. This place gave me a lot, I hope I gave back what was needed and had a fraction of the impact it had on me.

An excerpt from the Failure chapter of my upcoming book, "Everyone Wants to Name the Dog." Even though I visualized that leadership opportunities would come easy to me, they did not. I learned that I had to work to reach a vision. And the work extended way beyond high school and still continues today. The work is never done. "There wasn’t a doubt I would succeed in my schoolwork. School came easy to me because I loved everything about learning. I was focused on being a member of the high school student council. After all, I had tons of experience. In junior high, our student council went down state to meet with student councils from around Illinois to share ideas and immerse ourselves in leadership activities. I thought the high school elections would be a breeze. My experience didn’t give me an edge. Popularity is what I needed.  My confidence soon turned to mush. It wasn’t enough that I failed at everything I pursued in my freshman year, cheerleading, class officer and student council. I was forced to settle for clubs with what I thought to be losers where an election wasn’t a part of the process. I became a “joiner.”   And if it wasn’t enough that I couldn’t get elected or chosen for anything in my freshman year, it happened again as a sophomore. Even with construction paper cutouts in the shape of a banana, orange, or apple with the powerful message “Don’t be Fruity, Vote for Judy,” I didn’t win. In retrospect, the election slogan might be why I didn’t win. No one around me ever mentioned my failures, they just looked away. I wondered if they were laughing at me. I was aware of my inability to succeed when popularity was a must and the hurdle to participating in an activity where I thought I could make a difference. I felt a twinge of pain at the thought of another school election with a similar outcome. Of course, with an adolescent brain, I was not adept in knowing that the series of losing exercises were more than likely a steppingstone to successful sales career later in life. Rejection rolled off my back like water on a duck. I learned the life skill of moving on. As my mom would say, "Another bus will come along." Wish that I’d known then that losing was a painful but an important bridge to my future success. It might have softened the blows. And I learned that the “joiners” were individuals on the kinder side of life." #failureispartofsuccess #losingisok #leadership #joiner ISRI
